Doohickey - May, maybe not. If you're lugging the engine (accelerating from a rpm that is too low), you hear bagging / knocking. Also, the doohickey / cam chain is on the left side so I would think if the doohickey is malfunctioning you'd hear more and a different type noise from that side. Otherwise, it might be bearings, piston slap, etc. Don R100, A6F

KLR's love making weird noises to worry new owners. They all do that, as well as emitting a little bit of a whining/clanking/whirring noise from all the chains in the left side case if you hold your ear close. Mine was doing that when it had 20,000 miles, and is still doing that with 37,000 miles. Do handle the doohickey if you haven't done that, and adjust the valves, though, simply because those are necessary to keep your ride going.

The KLR engine makes a lot of racket even when its in good order. It can be lugged on trails when needed and will pull like a tractor, just don't call on it to do that for long periods. Once you become familiar with the normal engine sounds you will notice changes that foreshadow doom. BTW, ear plugs make things sooooo much better if you are not using them now. DonM

Hey Gang, I am selling my 2000 Kawasaki KLR650. It has been professionaly color converted to a 2003, including tank. I installed a KTM Super Moto front fender, customized the rear fender so it dosn't have the "Dork" look. It has 2 new Dunlop tires installed on it 525 miles ago, new front & rear brake pads, new chain and sprockets,Supertrapp Exhaust, mini LED front turn signals, new set of gel progrips and more. The bike has 9500 miles on it, and runs great. I would say it is a STRONG 9 out of 10. The price of $2500 is non negotiable unless you want things taken off the bike. I am located in Stillwater, Oklahoma. email me for PICS at dmflegler@.... or call me after 6pm Dave @ 405-624- 1955 or 405- 742-4034.
