footpeg bracket strengthening: a different approach
My buddy Mike came up with an innovative way of strengthening the
notoriously weak KLR footpeg mounts. Picture HowTo posted here:

We put these on his bike and my bike today. WAY stronger!

I didn't realize you have to register at klrworld to view the article.
IMO it's worth doing because that is the best KLR board around, but
if you don't want to, I have created a version of the article on my

I'd still caution anyone against using hardened bolts like 12.9s or Grade 8s as you used, and instead use the softer bolts and carry spares. The reasoning being it's a lot easier to change stripped bolts in the field than it is the footpeg box and a stripped footpeg box makes for interesting riding positions. And no, the passenger pegs will not support your weight when riding offroad out of the saddle without bending into the swingarm. I'd still be able to strip your upgraded nuts regardless, I think that filling the box with a solid hunk of steel is really the ultimate fix... <><><><><><> <><><><><><> Michael, Nice job documenting your footpeg upgrade. Thanks for sharing it. I really like the use of the bimetal hole saw to remove the original nuts. One thing that might be worth pointing out to folks is with this fix an off the shelf centerstand will no longer mount to the bike. They are usually a tight fit but with this fix I'm sure they won't fit at all. Again, thanks for sharing. Jeff, Thanks for all your excellent postings, you are a real teacher. I agree that Michael N's buddy Mike's footpeg-mount modification is incredibly insightful >> going through the face of the mount. Zach's idea is also excellent. Maybe Eagle Mfg could CNC slugs that could be flush welded to the mounts. I think the SW-MOTECH centerstand would work with buddy-Mike's footpeg-mount-mod because the brackets aren't welded to the centerstand frame. Thanks for all the great discussion and ideas on this list. You guys are awesome! <><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> Ed, Thanks for your nice comments, I appreciate them. I wasn't aware of the SW-Motech centerstand until you mentioned it. I did a quick google search and found some installation instructions. I'm not sure it would work well with the mounts spread apart further after the "Mike Fix" for the footpeg bolts. I see it says they use plastic bushings for the pivot points. Moving the pivots apart maybe 3/8"-1/2" would in my best guess provide to issues. It would change the amount of stress on the pivots and mount bolts. It would provide an opportunity for the center stand to move side to side. Now this is just guessing after spending a few minutes trying to look at dark pictures of a product I've never seen. But I think you're correct that the SW-Motech centerstand would have a chance to be mounted after the "Mike Fix". I'm certain a Dual-Star type centerstand wouldn't fit. I bet there isn't enough of a market for the CNC mount slugs to make it profitable for Eagle Mike to do the research, design, prototyping, programing and manufacturing of slugs. I think it is a good idea to use softer bolts so you have a chance to replace them in the field it needed. It's even a better idea in my opinion to not be knocking a footpeg off the bike. But I know how things go on an adventure sometimes and unexpected things do happen. : ) Best, Jeff Saline ABC # 4412 South Dakota Airmarshal Airheads Beemer Club www.airheads.org The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650, 79 R100RT> Jeff, > > Thanks for all your excellent postings, you are a real teacher. > > I agree that Michael N's buddy Mike's footpeg-mount modification is > incredibly insightful >> > going through the face of the mount. > > Zach's idea is also excellent. 3 months and 4000 miles into my 08'
I gotta say I love it. I still ride my rebuilt 04' a lot and it seems almost clumsy compared to my 08'. The braking, the handling, the feel, it just seems better. Dont get me wrong, I love the 04, and I am building it into a "dirt bike" 14t front etc, and I dug all of the 50k niles I put on it, but the 08', well it's just better.
Heated grips, vest, 12 volt outlette, givi trunk, it's all just working so well.
But I am ready for Kawasaki to build a KLR 950.......
