Hi Everyone, Mike FINALLY shipped me the tools for the doohickey replacement, with the condition that I ship digital pics and instructions in return. I'm between websites right now...meaning that I don't currently have one. I don't know if the KLR list will support large files, but I'd be happy to ship the doohickey manual, which I have apparently been employed to produce, to anyone who's interested. Fred, please forgive me if you're way ahead of me on this one. I have little doubt that you are. Anyway, I should get to it within the next three weeks or so. Anyone who'd like to see the pix and text, please e-mail me via backline...make sure that there's nothing in the subject line that says 'KLR', and I'll make sure that you get the entire file. In fact, I'll create a folder which directs all mail to 'Doohickey'...make sure that the subject line contains this word, and I'll make sure that you all get everything. Hi all, I have a 99 that I have to replace the doohickey. My question is what spring should i go with. The new torsion spring? Does that replace the other springs? What else do I need to replace while I'm in there? Adjuster? Rotorbolt? Thanks Brad

Some dealers that I've talked to, reuse the rotor bolt but the manual says to replace it. When torqued up to 125-130 ft-lbs it stretches and that is what keeps it tight. Technically, the bolt won't provide the same locking force if reused but I guess the dealers have more experience with it than me. At $11-$12, put in a new bolt and should never have to mess with it again. I was careful and reused my original gaskets but you can see it might not be the perfect solution. The paper gaskets have a thin layer of silvery paint / rubbery stuff, on both sides, that tends to stick to each mating surface near the bolt-holes. If you put it back together just right (the stuff here and there on the cases versus the gaps of it on the actual gasket) you shouldn't have any leaks. Besides two torque wrenchs (one for 125 ft-lbs and one for 71 in-lbs), the next important thing to have is Blue Loctite. Don R100, A6F

You should probably buy the puller unless you are a machinist or have access to a free machinist that knows what's happening in the way of making a puller. You can make the rotor holder from a 1 1/4" open end wrench if you can bend the wrench. So you'll need a wrench and heat source like an oxy-fuel torch. It's just two 90 degree bends in the wrench and you can easily do them once the engine is open and can see the inside of the rotor. If you tell folks on list where you're located there may be some tools available locally.
