18 inch front wheel
I got together with some local KLR guys the other day and one had a
18 inch front rim / tire (fatter tire). He loved it when they all
went riding in rocky areas in Arkansas recently. I asked how it was
at high speed and he said a little squirriley due to an increased
fork angle but overall was happy with it. He said it costs him about
$50 to do. I wonder if anyone has ever tried a 19 inch or 20 front
rim with wide tire?

what rim/spokes etc. did he use and did he do it himself or is there
somebody out there doing it commercially?
thanks Joe

He told me but I forgot. He had someone else do it. I may see him
again this weekend at the CycleWorld bike show. If I do I'll ask.
Type-o on price - it costs about $450.

Interesting, what tire is being used? I have found no downside to the 18". At speed it feels more planted then the 21". Tank slap and other asphalt and comparative wind discrepancies are reduced over the stock tire due to the greater contact patch. In the dirt, the wider tire will float through the soft stuff and when going over rocks and rough terrain, the wider profile will roll over without deflection that the skinner tire will be prone to experience. Also, the wider tire allows running of much low air pressure which would destroy a rim or cause a pinch flat with the skinner tire. A wider 18" front is a great improvement for both road and trails on the KLR. I wouldn't advise it for a true lightweight MX but for the weight distribution of the KLR, it is an amazing improvement. 18 inch front wheel
Hi Cris,
EagleMike, Mark Bakarich and I laced up 18" fronts about a year and a half
ago.................. We got our rims and 5mm spokes from Buchanon's in LA
and had them laced up in about an hour or so, thanks to the facilities at
EagleMike's shop; dial gauges, big vises, proper spoke wrenches and a good
spoke torque wrench.
Anyway, I put a 120/70x18 Michelin Pilot Activ on my wheel and Mike put a
Bridgestone 120/70x18 BT45 on his. I'm not sure what Bakarich put on his.
Now, with 18 months and 5,000+ miles on mine, I have absolutely no
complaints about my new front end. It tracks like it's on rails and has
ZERO twitchiness. My KLR now handles like my '72 Ducati 450 Jupiter, a
little slow in response, it takes a little more effort to initiate a turn,
but corners like its running on velcro, very planted and secure
As I posted somewhere, maybe even here, the trail has decreased by less
than 1/4" and the rake is within 2 degrees of stock.
Your compadre was riding off road with his new front end, did he lower the
pressure in his tires? If so, did he air them up afterwards? What tires
was he running? What kind of rim did he use, what diameter of spokes did
he use? Are the pinch bolts on his forks properly torqued? Is there any
slop in his steering head bearings? Are his front and rear suspension
components up to snuff? There's a whole lotta stuff that affects how the
front end reacts, so make sure everything else is as correct as it can be.
BTW, it was close to $200 with the rim, spokes, tube and tire.

Also looks like you could do a ride height adjustment with extenders or the like. I once did a 19" on my old XT Yamaha 500 with good results. Good stability and all. 18 inch front wheel
I've logged over 25,000 miles since early 04 when I transplanted the
big 18 rear on the front of the Hoss KLR.
Since then I've done Pam's Sherpa too and have over 8,000 miles with
a big rear 18 on the front.
We won't be goin back.
The increase in stability in all conditions outweigh any small
change in rake or increase in weight.
I knew quite a few are doin this transplant now, but haven't seen
any others till this year in Tennessee and New Mexico.
I don't feel so lonely anymore.
I've been sendin anyone that asks, to Woody's Wheel Works and
haven't heard any complaints.
This certainly wouldn't qualify as a "Must Do" type thing, but sure
has been a blast in the mud and sand!
I don't really carve the streets hard, I'm knobbed pretty good, but
the Super Moto Hoodlums seem to like big rubber on the front.
Not sure about the fit of a 19 inch rim with a say 120-90 rear tire
on the front of a KLR.
It may get you up in the more narrow area between the fork boots and
rub.
Maybe a lower profile would work.
I used the 18s for better tire selection and clearance.
I agree that if you have this much more rubber on the ground and
have stability issues, even with the slight change in rake, there
are other factors to be concerned with.
I run a type 1 Terror Flex on the front and Hoss still seems real
stable at 70mph long as I'm goin straight.

www.ProCycle.us will lace up rims for KLR's as well. Jeff is a highly accomplished mechanic, machinist and does excellent work at a fair price.

Thanks Wes, the more the merrier!
Some of the obstacles with this is the fact that if you want to save
bucks, you'll use a rear wheel already drilled from somethin else.
The dimple and hole angle will not aim the spokes at a front hub
like it did the rear hub it was intended for.
The holes in the dimples will have to be drilled to compensate or
all the spokes will be bent when it's laced up.
It's a Lucky Hoodlum that can find a wheel guy who will talk to him
and help get a project like this goin!
