impending top end failure?
Hello,
I just noticed a very slight oil burn smell when I blipped the
throttle in neutral to about 3-4000rpm. Tiny bit of bluish white smoke
was visible then, but only when observed veery carefully. Oil
consumption does not seem to have changed, but I was wondering if this
is a sign of piston ring failure in the near future? I don't know if
it was always like this, or it just started happenign recently for it
is barely noticeable.
Thank you in advance,
Tatsu

Hi Tatsu! It might mean that your rings are wearing a bit, or it could be that there's just some carbon buildup in the ring pack that's limiting the effectiveness of the rings. Hello Blake, it has about 28,000 miles on it right now.

Leak down test it and know for sure what's going on.

That's probably enough mileage to crud up the rings, but probably not enough to cause excessive wear (assuming good maintenance). There's a product called Auto-Rx that does a very good job of cleaning the ring pack (as well as the rest of the engine/transmission system). I'm not associated with the company in any way, but they did give me a free bottle of the stuff in exchange for permission to publish my experience with the product. You can read about how it eliminated my KRL's oil usage on my blog. -- Blake Sobiloff http://sobiloff.typepad.com/blakeblog/> San Jose, CA (USA) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]> Hello Blake, it has about 28,000 miles on it right now.

Hi Blake,
I have a question for you. My bike IS actually burning oil now.
Approximately a quart per 1000 miles. I might consider using that
stuff, but I wonder how it works in the long run? Also, do you have to
continue using it, or is it just use it once and you are done, kind of
deal? I wonder if anyone else has any experience with that stuff.

Hi if you are having oil burning problems don,t forget about the
little oil seals on the valve stems. these little guys have given me
problems before. And a quart over 1000miles doesn,t sound bad. I
have an 08 klr now. had an 02, and a couple old dr,s All of them
around town used no oil open them up on the hwy and ive seen as much
as a quart in 500 miles. Even my new 08 klr has heavy consumption
when run above 5500rpm and uses none when kept below 4500 rpm. I
certianly wouldn,t worry to much about it unless you are finding
that your off hiway consumption is high. Cheers. Scotty

Hi, I guess it could be the oil seals, in which case, would be cheaper
and easier to fix. I will have to check it out still. Hopefully, I can
get my hands on a leak down tester sometime soon, which was suggested
to me earlier. If it was approximately quart of oil consumption in
1000 miles under hard riding, I wouldn't be so worried. However, I
rarely push it that hard. In fact, this oil consumption was after
riding mostly around 4000-4300 rpm on top gear, give or take a few.
Now, that's what worries me. Leak down test, I believe, should tell me
whether or not its the valves or the rings. I am kinda bummed for I
have to sell the bike by middle of August(moving out of the country),
and worried the value will go down a lot. Maybe sell it as parts bike
.

Hi Tatsu! Sorry for the late reply--I was off riding for a few days. The Cycle-Rx "stuff" isn't something you need to continuously add to the oil. One treatment cycle will clean up mild problems, while two treatment cycles will clear up more severe problems. Rev. Martin was going to try Cycle-Rx in several of his bikes. I'd be interested in his experiences once he's had a chance to complete a treatment cycle. -- Blake Sobiloff http://www.sobiloff.com/> San Jose, CA (USA)> I might consider using that > stuff, but I wonder how it works in the long run? Hello Blake, Background: 2001 KLR w/22,500 miles. I am using ~6oz oil/1000 smiles. Not a lot, but Blake had such good results --going to zero oil consumption, shrug, why not give it a try? I bought the product and it arrived just after the last oil change, so I have not had a chance to use it yet. Today is the day. Even as I type, the oil (or earl) is draining. I just came back into the house to check the ratio Cycle Rx/qt of oil, and while I am waiting I will read the DSN board--and low and behold, Blake is 'talking' about me! (I am only 280 messages behind.) Good timing. eh? Here is the link http://www.cycle-rx.com/application.html that tells you 2oz/qt plus 2oz for the filter. If all goes well, I should have 1000smiles on the clock in 3-4 weeks-- I am on the road for a week sans motorcycle and the KLR will be resting. News in 1000 miles! revmaaatin.> treatment cycle. > -- > Blake Sobiloff > http://www.sobiloff.com/> > San Jose, CA (USA) >
