If I Buy the saddel bags offered by Kawasaki do I have to install a
metal support frame to the sides of my bike?

Hey Kuppy
If you haven't already, I would suggest having a look at the Ortlieb Saddlebags. From what I've seen they are much superior to the Kawa brand. They are waterproof, dustproof, and have no zippers to fail. I havea set, and I know others do on this forum as well.
Check 'em out.
It is a good idea to have something that will keep the bags away from the muffler. I had a buddy fabricate a stainless rack that worked well. Ortlieb says 4 inches but I only had 2 inches between the muffler and bag with no problems.
Take care,
Garrett

Yep or you will melt the muffler side bag and your plastic on that side.

No. You dont.
I got a bracket that is sold on e-bay that attaches to the muffler. Its pushes the bag away from the muffler and works just fine. $15 w/ shipping instead of 50+ for fabrication.
I have been using my bags to put all sorts of things in from school books to boots/cloths and groceries ( Milk on the left, Hot stuff on the right )
No burns on my bags. Stock Kawi ones too.

I respectfully disagree with Criswell...
It depends on how you load the bags.
I have the Kawi bags and just pack my rain suit and
other light items on the muffler side. No melting
issues in 3 long weekend trips this summer. For what
it's worth, I have a Corbin flat saddle and I had to
sew in a modification similar to the one Captain Bob
recomended to me via the forum earlier this year.
Also, I've read that if you are packing the muffler
side bag heavy, it helps to stick a squashed beer can
under the side panel. I may try this if I ever see a
squashed beer can.

Let me rephrase ..... you do have to have something to keep the bag
off the plastic / muffler. What it is or will be will be your choice.
You can even make something your self if you are skilled and have the
tools.
