I think the chainsaw bar oil that I am using is closer to 20W, works great. _____ From: Jokerloco9@... I am amazed how everyone jumped on the Chain issue. Here we have a KLR that has 100,000 miles on it, and we are worried about a $70 chain's life. I say OORAW for the KLR going 100,000 miles. Rick A17 Gabe wrote: Dang it I goofed up somewhere and my message didn't make it in. SO here I go again: I like the idea of the Scottoiler, but have heard that in dirty/dusty conditions it can be worse than not having it because it will keep the chain so oily that it attracts extra dirt, accelerating wear. Is it made more for machines that see mainly street duty? I like to play in the dirt a fair amount so I don't know if it's for me or not...anybody have input on that? And I know of at least one lister, Matt from Placerville, that got nearly 50K off his chain. It was somewhere past 47K when teeth started breaking off the rear sprocket. Its doable. Pat G'ville, NV

Actually, and this is according to my well kept records, it was the OEM rear sprocket that lasted 40,714 miles. During that same 40K miles I went through 2 chains and 3 front sprockets. Sorry to dissapoint ;>) Matt

I am not debating that a chain can last 50,000 miles. I am saying that it is a great (and reassuring) feat, that we have a 100,000 mile KLR. The heck with the chain. Kudos to the KLR. Rick A17 Pat Schmid wrote:

maybe it has something equivelant to the Dodge Truck undercarriage anti corrosion system. maybe we need to check his oil consumption and the rear seal.... Bogdan Swider wrote:

Color me skeptical. Maybe a fully enclosed chain living in an oil bath. That's more like it. I like to hear about the longevity of the KLR itself. I have 6,900 miles on mine and plan to own it till it asks to be buried. I hope to be letting all of you know when I get to 100,000 miles. I usually ride about 6,000 a year, so it may be a while. I am in Illinois, so it sits from November til April. I look forward to a long satisfying relationship with my KLR. It is the most pleasant bike i have owned. I just rode the Lost coast ride this past summer on it, it looks like hell because it has been through hell over the past five years (and I have crashed it alot :) but unbelievalbly it is still going! 100,000 mile klr

Post by will gilmore » Wed May 02, 2007 9:21 am

I know this topic has been gone over in the past but just to refresh us -- are there any stockers out there with 100,000 miles plus on them? Also, is there an average lifespan as far as years in service and total miles? Just wondering how much time my well cared for mostly highway driven A12 ("98") might have in her. Thanks, Will p.s. The fuel leak from under the tank I reported was indeed simply loose screws on petcock. Once tightened the leak nearly stopped. What little loss there is now is probably due to my needing to replace the rubber seals.

I can't speak from experience since my A15 has only 15K on it but it seems to me that I've read 70k is about it for a well cared for KLR. Then it gets expensive. I love h earing the "long life" stories. At the rate I"m going I'll never be able to wear this baby out! But I'll try.

100,000 mile klr

Post by Glenn » Wed May 02, 2007 9:12 pm

From all that I've read a 100k mile KLR is a possibity. Paying good attention to the normal wear items and proper lubrication seems to be the key. I currently have a little over 20k on my A17. As a matter of fact I'm still on my stock chain. The stretch has not reached the limit yet and looks as if it could go another 7-10k before replacement. I do clean and lube it often. Almost every fillup. With the centerstand it is easy to do so its not a bother. I know I'm shootin for the 100k mark myself. Glenn - A17
