gas mileage/range/

Post by Birdmove » Mon Apr 02, 2007 12:37 am

I just ran my last tank fullto 189.8 miles, and the bike took 3.495 gallons to fill which works out to 54.3 mpg.My last tank before that was 55.6 mpg.I'm not complaining. What I'm wondering, is generally how many gallons until it starts sputtering and needs to go to reserve? Whats your experience? That will give me an idea of how many miles I can exspect to go before I need to switch to reserve. My bike runs great. It does pop a bit when downshifting and then using engine compression to slow me down.Thats usually a sign of leanness, but the thing is, my bike can be choked and started on a very cold morning, and will actually run fine and can be ridden off right away (though I let it warm up), even if I open the choke right away.So what I'm saying is that I can live with a little popping on decel, rather than messing with the jetting and screwing up my consistantly good gas mileage.I actually got 62 mpg for one tank when I really babbied it and kept the speed down.

Popping is common, sounds just like my experience. I see no need on my bike to violate the law by drilling out the idle screw adjustment cover. There are many scofflaws in this group however and I am taking down names and documenting their offenses. LOL I run into reserve on my bike at 230-240 miles. I then can ride at least 20 miles on reserve. After that there is the "super secret reserve" which is to lay the bike down on the left side to transfer gas to that side of the tank...then another few miles. I have never been able to put more then 5 gallons in mine at 240 miles. I get about 48 miles per gallon riding with about a 350lb.load, panniers and me. Capt. Bob in Durham, CT. I wouldn't count on the experience of others, as some folks have different-length pickup straws in the tank, and things like fuel filters can affect how much fuel someone can get out of their tank. It's trivial to run your bike until you hit reserve and then fill-up, and that's a much better figure to rely on. Having said that, Bill Watson recently posted some of the figures for his bike (check the archive), and before I switched to an IMS tank I had around 5 gallons before I hit reserve, and only a half gallon until the reserve was empty. -- Blake Sobiloff http://sobiloff.typepad.com/blakeblog/> http://sobiloff.typepad.com/klr_adventure/> San Jose, CA (USA) [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

....I switched to reserve this last Saturday at 303 miles. New engine... and, oh yeah, new IMS tank. I'm going to run it to reserve (if it doesn't put my in the likely situation of having to walk to gas) for the next two or three tanks. I want to *know* from experience how far I can get on a tank. I don't like running the engine lean - popping on decel. Maybe it's just me but it seems like false economy. I've been operating on the idea that fuel also provides some cooling and lubricant. I would rather and err on the side of just a little extra than not quite enough. It's only a few cents extra at each fill up That's a whole lot cheaper and less inconvenient than engine problems. As I use my KLR alot for commuting, I notice that I have to switch to reserve anywhere around 250-275 miles. I usually don't go too much further before filling up. At fillup I'll have around 280-300 miles indicated and then pump in around 4.5 to 5 gallons to top it right off. This gives me approx 60mpg.(which I regularly get WHEN COMMUTING) Now my commute is very gas mileage friendly and I don't drive it like I stole it while commuting either. These numbers do change (sometimes significantly) if I drive it hard or do alot of trail riding , but then I'm not usually driving with a full tank or checking my mileage at those times either. On a side note it doesn't matter what grade of gas I use either. My mileage is consistant running 87 or 91 octane. Glenn 03 KLR650A17

You should feel lucky then I get at best 175 to 190 miles between fill ups and that switching to reserve. But i commute at 5500 to 6000 rpm. I guess if I drove it move conservatively I would get better milage. Oh and it ain't Smilage when your on your way to work at 3:30AM Kerry

Same here kerry, I'm big and don't baby it. I fill up at 175 usually about 4.8-4.9 gallons. On the highway I do get a solid 50mpg. --sam hudson, san antonio tx.

I hit reserve at 260. I just tested this yesterday. I then added exaclty 1 gallon. (Money was forgotten at home) I continued on until the od read 333 miles. At that point I added exactly 5 gallons. 333/6=55.5 mpg. I also have an extra tooth on the rear sprocket. Halve of my commute is at 30-45mph the other is at 60mph. My idle screw has not been turned, so I also get popping. But I beleave that I would anyway while decelerating, all of my bikes do. I beleave the baffeling and glass pack in mufflers normaly blocks that noise and our exaughst is not restrictive enough to block it. Generally 220 to 240 to reserve on my '00 klr650. Stock gearing, Idle screw out about 2.5 turns. Generally ride between 3500 - 5000 rpm and back roads 90% of the time. About 25% gravel ones. '43 Andy in Louisiana
