I broke down and bought a Garmin 76Csx. I bot it online from
Wallymart for $344.32 plus tax. Had it shipped to the store and paid
no shipping. Now I need to buy maps that are compatible. I was very
disappointed with the basic map that comes with the unit seems to be
pretty much useless.
I plan to use the Garmin for planning KLR rides on back roads,
(Forest Service roads, etc.) and finding directions to addresses, gas
stations, etc.when I'm traveling with my family. I'm one of those
guys that hate to ask for directions, (if you don't care where you
are, does it matter?) and when I do ask directions, I forget the
directions on the 2nd left turn. I tell my family I am taking a
shortcut; they get very upset with me.
I'm thinking about buying the following maps.
1) Map Source Topo. (It concerns me that these maps are very outdated)
2)CITY NAVIGATOR NT V8 (I HOPE THE NT DOES NOT RELATE TO WINDOWS NT?)
Does the group think these will fit my need?
What other maps do you recommend?
Where do you recommend I buy them?
Thanks in advance Love this group

<><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> t2dennsa, I used a 76CSx on De Tour last summer. It worked well and I loaded about 1,900 maps on it using Garmin MapSource Roads and Recreation and also TOPO. I really like the TOPO on my computer as it's easy to see terrain when zoomed in. But on the GPS it can get pretty busy pretty fast. I think about all the roads and trails on TOPO are also on Roads and Recreation. But R&R has been discontinued for a few years. I bought my copy (original) on eBay for about $70. If I was only going to get one I'd probably get R&R. I don't have any experience with City Navigator. I don't think you can put in an address on the 76CSx and get directions. If you figure out how to do that please post a note as I'd like that capability. Here are two suggestions. Call Garmin tech support and talk with a tech about what you'd like to do. The wait to get to talk with someone may be 20 minutes or longer but I've called them maybe 5-6 times and they've always been very pleasant, knowledgeable and helpful. I never felt rushed and they even allowed me time to consider what they've said and then ask more questions. Some of the question in hind sight were kind of dumb. : ) Also check the Garmin website occasionally for free updates to your GPS and also any MapSource products you get. A version 3.0 R&R gets updated to the latest version with one download. The other suggestion is to get some DeLorme Atlas and Gazetteer for the states you'll be riding in. They work really well with the MapSource products and show topo map info and all the little trails. When Steve and I were planning De Tour we often looked at Gazetteers and then the MapSource maps on the computer and created routes. One good source for Gazetteers is www.amazon.com . Shelf price in stores is usually about $20 for one state. At amazon it's usually about $14. And often if you buy $25 or more you can qualify for free shipping. I think I've got maybe a dozen gazetteers and really enjoy using them for route planning and dreaming. I am pretty sure the NT version will not work with 76CSx, it is only for the
newer Street Pilots. You need the standard "City Select North America". I
have v7 and have no complaints. You can upgrade once a year for about $50.
though I went about 3 years before upgrading from v4 to v7. No complaints. I
am using the original program that came with my GPS V in 2003. They allow
installation on two GPS units simultaneously. Also, if you buy any unit or
software, I believe you can upgradre to the latest version available for no
cost when it is first installed.

directions. Works fine. Hit the 'Find' button, move the little arrow down to 'Address'. Punch in your address using the sick user interface that Garmin provides (use the arrow rocker and the 'Enter' key to select each character off an on-screen keyboard), once you've entered the address select 'Goto', and it'll route you there. Only works if you've loaded maps from 'City Select North America' into the beasty for the area you want to travel though and selected them as the active maps (go to the map page w/'page' button, hit 'menu', goto 'setup maps', hit 'menu', you'll get a menu that allows you to choose which maps are active). And BTW, the routing isn't always perfect. If it routes me somewhere stupid, I'll just re-route myself manually along a better route, and when I move off its stupid route it'll re-calculate and usually give me the correct route for the rest of the trip. But yeah, the 60CSx/76CSx have the user interface from hell, figuring out how to do all this is non-trivial, but once you figure it out, it Just Works(tm)... -E> On Thu, 15 Mar 2007 00:55:19 -0000 "t2dennsa1" writes: > > I plan to use the Garmin for planning KLR rides on back roads, > > (Forest Service roads, etc.) and finding directions to addresses, > > gas > > stations, etc.when I'm traveling with my family. <><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> Eric, I tried following your instructions and it didn't work on my 76CSx. Then I read about I had to have City Navigator loaded. I don't. So it looks like the address function is with City Navigator and not the GPS unit. Thanks for sharing that info. replace your stock klr sliders today!
Swingarm, front, chain side.
Keeps chain from gouging the swingarm.
Dirtly.com I think used to sell colored replacements that could be
installed without actually removing the swingarm. (Nothing on the site
anymore about them)
