For almost 3yrs I have been reading the many different opinions and concerns about chain lubes. Being a " I'll decide for myself " type person, I have experimented with a few of the groups ideas and this is "my" opinion. Gear lube in a pump oil can; very, very time consuming to apply. Very messy and is ALWAYS slinging off onto passengers favorite pair of jeans. Not good. Didn't seem to last very long before the chain started to squeak again. Spray chain lube from Fleet Farm; much, much, better results, but not good enough. Extra heavy duty chain spray lube from fleet farm; I will NEVER do that again. Then I jumped on the band wagon and tried WD-40 " even though I personally think the stuff is crap and a waste of my money". It is easy/lazy to apply. Not nearly as messy as the others. Sure does make my chain look pretty. But I learned very quickly that I HAD to spray it EVERY TIME I wanted to go for a ride. If I didn't I had that little voice over my shoulder, "the chain is squeaking again, you didn't oil it did you?, It sounds like crap, take it home and oil it so we can finish our ride without all this squeaking. My opinion is that if my chain is constantly squeaking or on the verge of it, than it is not being properly lubricated. 2yrs ago I found a solution that I am very happy with. 10w-40 motor oil in a oil pump can. So cheap I can't put a penny figure on it. I always have motor oil on hand. Takes 5 minutes to apply and 5 more minutes to go around the block a couple times to get the excess to sling off, "must keep her favorite jeans clean". Now I oil it from time to time when I have a free moment, not every single time when I want to ride, sometimes weeks slip by between oil applications. By the way I have not had to adjust my chain in the last 6000mi. Considering I'm throttle happy, wheelie happy, river crossing happy, hill climbing happy, mild jump happy, and 2/3rds of the time with passenger, I'm satisfied at last. By the way for those who bashed me 2yrs ago for putting a LAZER PRO DURO off road with stage 2 kit and air box mods, you don't know what your missing. !st gear ROLL-ON wheelies at will with or without passenger, and when the humidity is right, 2nd gear gear ROLL-ON wheelies at will with or without passenger. I'm having so much fun you'll never experience. Makes her stomach all a tickle. Pay attention out there. People are preoccupied with bills and x-mas shopping

chain oiling
I've never had a chain on any of my many machines squeak and I'm having trouble understanding why you would. Unless of course you are not using a modern O or X ring chain. Or, the seals have completely worn away. Also, wheelies with a passenger? Don't know if I'd endorse that kind of activity.

stupid maintenance... (klr650cable lubrication)
For the motorcycle historians cast your mind back to the late 70's and early eighties. Bel Ray actually marketed a cable lubricator product. It was similar to a syringe in that it had a stainless needle that was inserted into the cable. The oil was squeezed from the body through the needle into the cable. It was a blue coloured oil from memory. Then again, all Bell Ray stuff was blue back then. It was a fairly light oil, probably just the two stroke oil. Cant really vouch for its effectiveness. I would think that WD40 or better still, Inox would be good way to go.
