rear racks questions

Post by Yan » Tue Oct 24, 2006 1:57 pm

There are rear racks for KLR650 available on eBay for $80 - anyone has these? Any idea as to how the quality is? I remember one fellow complaining about them cracking back on the KLR650.net forum, but the forum crashed and took the archive along with it. Looks like the reviews on eBay are all good, but those are usually done right after you get the product, while I am more interested in someone who has actually used the racks for some time. Thanks.

I guess I didn't make myself clear - I mean rear side racks, not the rack that goes behind the seat. Here is the link: http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=007&item=170040285695&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

I just bought and installed the JC Whitney 46 litre trunk. Went on pretty easy, the only thing I am upgrading is bigger washers for a better hold. It doesn't leak, looks good and holds my full face helmet and some other stuff. It might be worth looking into. rear racks questions

Post by Spike55 » Tue Oct 24, 2006 4:55 pm

Yes, I have them installed for the last month. I haven't figured out what saddlebags to use yet but these racks seem substantial enough to handle anything. After dropping the bike this past weekend in the rain on muddy roads around Renova, PA, I used the left-side rack as a hand-hold to lift up the bike. The welds look good and the paint job is "worth" as some would say. My only concern or tweek is the method of anchoring. The hex-head bolts that you remove have "shoulders" that fit down inside the recesses of the OEM rack and rear foot peg bracket. These side rack tubes are welded to hollow tubes (the posts) with a washer at the bottom and you run your new hex-head through the hole in the washer back into the rear rack and foot peg bracket. It would have been better to have those "shoulders" to improve the anchoring rather than just surface pressure. I'm hoping that the weld around the washers doesn't bust out. I'm hoping that I explained it enough. Jeff Saline's rack pics show how he made his bike attachment posts out of solid rod (hole thru the middle of course) but the shoulders really add piece of mind and are the best design. If these racks had those solid posts, they would be greatly improved. Anyway, my experience has been so far so good. Plenty of protection around the muffler tip to prevent heat damage to your bags. which hand guards

Post by ssridesred » Wed Oct 25, 2006 1:15 am

I have the Maier Deluxe woods pro with Pro Taper SE ATV mid-bend bars and I have been amazed at how they have held up. One time I dumped the bike hard in Moab(on a rock of course) and was very surprised to see that the bars and guards were straight. They were a pain to mount but work.
