Yup. Two bikes (wife and I have matching 650s), did both at just after 500. Mine was fine, hers needed 2 shims. I am sure it would not have killed the engine to wait, but the idea is to do the checks at the right mileage at first as the valves burn in to their stable state. After you get clear on the valve wear on the bike then you can be pretty safe to delay the later checks. But I agree that this is something you should learn to do yourself. I don't know about on this board, but for sure there some Mississippi guys on KLR650.net, and they have been known to get together for tech sessions.

That was me Doug. Thanks for the info. My dealer mechanic reccommended I wait till 1500 and I didn't want to stop riding for even a day, so I waited. Mine weren't very tight at 1500 and I just set them for max clearance. They're still tappin alittle at 24000 but I better get to them soon, I'm sure. Rod

Sometime in May I am going to attempt to check and replace the valve shims. I got the video and shop manuals and the other info on the net. What I was wanting to know is..... After you set the arrow pointing forward and the T mark in the window you start to check one of the valve clearance, do you check all of the shim clearance at that time or do you have to turn the engine some and then check the next shim clearance? Tom, While you're in there, if ANY valves are OK, pull out the shims and make note of the numbers ANYWAY. That way you'll have a handle on which shims you'll need in future (mine goes to a SMALLER number/size when needing replacement) so you can have them on hand. Ed

When I was out testing the dimmer switch I cleaned (so far it is working) I saw a guy on a red KLR 650 pull into a gas station. I made a U turn and waited for him to come out. We chated for a while and I asked him if he had did anything to his KLR. He said other than tires, brakes, oil and filter change it was stock. He had 11,000 miles on his 2005 KLR and never checked his valve clearence. I wonder how many miles you can go before something happens. I did tell him he should have checked his valves many miles ago. Tom SW Pennsylvania
