how to drain gas tank?

Post by Jeff Marshall » Sat May 20, 2006 6:57 pm

Hey guys, I just picked up an 03 KLR that has been sitting for about 9mo. I got it running but it won't idle very well and back fires something fierce! I thought I would try new gas but I can't drain the gas tank. When I disconnect the line from the petcock nothing comes out. It doesn't matter whether it is on reg or reserve. And it is just about a full tank. Oh yeah..California....with all the smog stuff. Thanks, Jeff --------------------------------- Sneak preview the all-new Yahoo.com. It's not radically different. You aren't sucking enough. When you suck as badly as, say, the typical teen girl pop star's "songs", then you might get some gas out. Oh, the thing to suck on is the vacuum shut-off. That's the second line to the petcock. Get a turkey baster and a piece of vacuum hose, and suck on it. That pulls a plunger inside the petcock that allows gas to flow. -E

Maybe you should try the loving method... Remove the vacuum line and suck.. ;-) Vacuum operated petcock, needs the vacuum to let fuel flow. Also might as well drain the float bowl, you will see a nipple on the right side bottom with a screw above it, hook a small line to the nipple and open screw up to drain bowl. "I" recommend adding Seafoam to the fuel when you refill. This might head off a carb teardown. Dooden A15 Green Ape

If you suck on the vacuum line and then grab it tight as hell with vice grips, it'll maintain enough suction that you don't have to sit there sucking forever. I also recommend SeaFoam. Magical stuff. As an aside, what does one DO with 6 gallons of bad gas? I mean, what would YOU do? I got a parts bike last summer with a half a tank of REALLY bad gas. Where do you put it? -Luke --- Dooden wrote:

If I get any old gas say over two three weeks old in the bikes I drain it from the bike and run it in my old truck with 150k miles on it. Truck runs a bit soft on old gas. I will usually add some FI cleaner to it also. 15 y/o 4Runner and still running strong.

Our fire department regularly flushes the gas out of generators because they tend to sit and the gas goes bad. The gas we pull out goes into the tank of the utility truck. To be safe, I would only put a gallon or two in per tankful. The other option is to have one hell of a bonfire. That's exactly what we do with it - mix 50% old gasoline & 50% diesel fuel, be sure it's mixed well & pour it on your burn pile (before lighting it!). Carefully throw matches down until it lights. Reminds me of an old joke: Q: "How do you turn a cat into a dog?" A: "One can of lighter fluid & a match: WOOF!" (Say it out loud! :-) Jeff Layton A15 in Austin

When I bought my first KLR 650 in 1988 the cops were always pulling me over, either to see what the hell I was doing with this dirt bike on the road, or just to see the bike up close. That was fun. You're welcome.

I've seen the results of trying this quite a few times, if you're going to attempt it give revmartin a heads up so he can get the rotors turning. It's a lot safer to mix a gallon or so at a time into something with a big tank. Bruce FF/EMT ret.

I sorta like that joke. I'm not a cat lover. I'm a dog guy. But ........ cruelty to pets is a bummer. They had a guy here stab and set fire to his Pitt Bull because it wouldn't mate. He got a light bail. I woulda threw away the key. Criswell
