a dual-sport friend is gone.......................
It's with great sadness that I have to pass on this information to
you. Our friend, Bill Monahan, aka Wild Bill, who spent quite a bit
of time on this list and put many, many miles on KLRs and other dual-
sport bikes decided to end his life on Tuesday evening at his home in
Cobb, CA.
There was no indication or note left as to the reason for his
decision, but suffice to say, he was obviously going through some
rough times. I wish I could tell you more. I am waiting to hear
about funeral arrangements, and will update you-all when I know more.
Bill lived in Santa Rosa, CA, a few miles from me before moving to the
mountains in Cobb Ca, and I've had quite a few get-togethers with Bill
for just coffee, dinner at a Mexican restaurant or even a short
evening KLR ride into the mountains. He was quite a character to say
the least, but really did enjoy the simple things in life. I enjoyed
spending time with him.
I personally have enjoyed a few good day-long rides as well as an
overnight camping trip up at the Lost Coast with Bill and his faithful
sidekick, James Pool who's a great chef who could whip up anything and
make it delicious.
Some of you may have met him at the big doohickey feast at my house in
Forestville, CA, when he showed up on his new KTM 950 Adventurer.
To end this rotten post on a good note, I'm posting 3 links below to
my pictures of Bill at the doohickey party, our camping trip to the
Lost Coast, and an all-day ride in the Mendocino National Forest.
These were times when Bill was having a really good time, and that's
how I want to remember him. He will be missed by many.
Bills KTM is in picture #16. It's in the center on the driveway. You
can't miss it, it's the only bike that's NOT a KLR. Bill himself made
it into only one of these photo's..........he's the guy on the left of
photo #20, towards the back of the garage behind Dale Steele. (just
hit the "NEXT" link on my smugmug account to see the other photos)

Here's Bill, James, and I at the Lost Coast for a weekend of riding
and fun.

What a drag.... that's sad. Thanks for the news and let us know if
there's any online guest book.
We butt heads a few times on the list many, many years back, but as I
got to know him through posts and emails, I had hoped to eventually
meet him.

Damn, RIP Bill. I met Bill and James (Keith too) at ESR1. Last I
heard from Bill he had moved out of the city to the hills and sold his
KLR and bought the KTM. He could ride that KLR like the wind.
Thanks for the update Moose and keep us posted.

I enjoyed Back Road Bill's posts and communicated with him off list. He had
a fine sense of humor, often earthy. What I liked best about him was his
above board honestly; with him you knew what you were getting however, like
most of us he didn't consider this list a place to showcase the darker side
of life. Ride on, Monahan.

Shit. I had assumed things were better for Bill after he got a place
in the Mtns. Bill and I had chatted a lot back when he was active on
the list and we met up at one of the Old Cycle Daze up in Donner CA
( Hwy 40)
He was a good soul , but nowadays ther is lots of stuff to be shamed
about. Guess things finally got to him.
Hang in there folks.

Very sorry to hear this. Bill was a great part of this
list. We tried to get together for rides several
times, but it never happened. I regret not getting to
meet him in person.
RIP Bill

>>>>all the rest (see msg#155541) Hi Moose, Thanks for posting. I have been thinking about Bill's death, and life in general over the past couple of days. Your post about Bill ending his life, coupled with a flight I made yesterday when I air-lifted a 17yo on Friday (near-vegetative state) has had me meditating how our lives are intermingled. The 17yo had attended a high school, DUI mock accident (which included this very same helo) 1 week prior to his own DUI accident 15 April. The message was not enough; Mr. 17yo got into his vehicle at ~2am, flipped his vehicle an estimated 3 times (end for end) ejecting him and there he lay on the South Dakota prairie until after 7am when his frantic father found him Here are two examples; we are surrounded by folks who care about us and sometimes, sometimes, we don't know how or to whom to ask for help. When I entered KLR-DSN-land, I looked at all the names, some humorous, some mysterious, others just their name, and I settled on a KLR name to reflect my current vocation and calling, revmaaatin. I have heard from some of you (offline) in this capacity, and want others to know that I can be the 'ad-hoc, self-appointed KLR chaplain' if you will allow me to fill that capacity. Like Sally in "Peanuts", who hangs out a plank that states, "The Dr. is IN", I want you to know that "the rev is IN" if any of you need someone to talk to, or need encouragement with a difficult issue in your life. Our communication can all be cyberspace or by phone. Send me a number and a good time to call. Write me at mjearl@... (two m's in comm) before you or a KLR friend does something irreversible. revmaaatin. somedays a med-pilot, somedays a cowboy, somedays a KLRista, but all days the rev> Cobb, CA. >
