charging through a 12v acc outlet

Post by hobbhavnklr650 » Tue May 02, 2006 8:12 am

I am looking for a convenient way to occasionally charge my battery. Is it possible to charge my KLR's battery through a 12v acc. outlet using a 2amp trickle charger? If not, I assume there is a way to attach a couple of "pernament" leads to the battery for charging and perhaps jumping. Does any one have ideas on this subject? Thanks. Keith Idaho KLR

My Battery Tender came with a battery lead: ring terminals on one end and an SAE connector on the other. Tucked under the seat, it was a quick and easy way to plug my bike in if I wasn't going to be riding for a while. I bought it quite a few years ago, but I imagine it's still bundled or available separately. -- Blake Sobiloff http://sobiloff.typepad.com/> San Jose, CA (USA)

Thanks. ================== I added a fused cigarette lighter outlet to a small aluminum mounted handle bar plate. My battery charger has a male cigarette adapter and this allows me to use accessories and charge the battery. The outlet is wired directly to my battery with a fuse. I use the outlet mainly for a heated vest. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com

<><><><><> <><><><><> Keith, Yes you could charge the battery through an accessory outlet if it's hooked directly to the battery. Using a 2 amp charger will require care to prevent overcharging the battery. The KLR650 battery is a 14 amp hour battery. So if it's really dead you could charge it for 7 hours with a 2 amp charger and not over charge it. I suggest you consider getting a battery tender or battery tender jr. which are smart chargers. They'll charge the battery and then go to a float mode and keep it charged without over charging. I think the Battery Tender Jr. goes for about $30. Normally on small batteries like used with most motorcycles a 1 amp charger is the largest suggested size. I think jumping through the accessory outlet will fry the outlet and or the wires depending on what actually happens during the procedure and the actual wiring set up. I use a set of home made jumper cables made using power wire for auto stereo systems and clips from Radio Shack. I think the wire gauge is 8 and the cost is less than $12. As long as you don't put more current through the circuit than the wires and fuse are rated for, it would be no different than hooking up directly to the battery. Forget jump starting though, the plug would most likely be fine, you would just blow the fuse for that circuit before any other damage was done. Jim
