Then when you look at that perhaps 10% profit on the deal, now subtract
overhead, such as building, utilities, telephones, taxes, employees, maintenance,
accounting, office expenses, insurance, advertising, ect, etc, etc if you
have ever owned a business. That 10% profit rapidly becomes 3% profit.
And all for working far more than a 40 hours a week, and the risk of owning
a business instead of being a well fed 9-5 government worker like me...

Ah yes, capitalism. You gotta love it. When I was looking for a used KLR,
I'd have looked for an older green one over a newer red one (no offense to
you red KLR owners, just my choice). Looking at the '06 I'd gladly pay a "c"
for genuine Kawasaki green. The joy of a bargain fades soon while the cost
of satisfaction lives long.

Find another dealer.. I called 15 dealers when I
bought mine, and only 2 would deal. I had a trade in.
Find the best deal and go for it.. and Ride!!! even if
you pay the $100.00 you wont be sorry..

For what it is worth, it is entirely possible the original poster misunderstood the reason for the $100 more for the green. He may have thought the dealer said Kawi said it was more, instead of it was just the dealer charging more due to the greater demand/lower supply of the green bikes.
By the way, when I bought my red one, they were having trouble selling the green ones.
Also, most of the reason other countries are making money is not necessarily their apparent superior view regarding the long term/short term economics. It is because they have a very cheap labor base which the U.S. can no longer compete with, such as all of the regulations, lawsuits, and labor unions.
(and yes, my job is union)

I thought these came from the factory this year with the lime green. What is
the dealer going to do if he does not want it in lime green, take the
plastics and the tank off? I think that is the purpose of his post. I
understand profit margins but I think it is ridiculous for the dealer to
charge extra for something that is already on the bike.
On the other hand, if the dealer is going to remove everything that is lime
green from the bike or charge you $100.00 to leave it on, then I think you
ought to go price this stuff out on eBay. The last plastic kit I bought was
$126.00 and did not include the tank which are going for around $170.00 and
up! Oh, and that was for a '95 KLR.

I'm not sure I understand your post, but I will clarify:
The 2006 KLR is available in both green and red straight from the factory. I saw both when I bought mine. At the time, the red was selling faster, but both were the same price, at my particular dealer. There is no dealer switching parts required.
Apparently, the original poster thought the dealer was doing something sinister by charging $100 more for the green ones. It should also be noted that even at the increased green price, the dealer is still selling at well below MSRP. (for whatever MSRP means to economics).
Seasoned new vehicle buyers know it is standard policy for dealers to raise prices for popular models or ones in short supply.
Actually, that is how the whole world works.

Ah. I didn't see the "selling well below MSRP" part. I thought this dealer was marking up the green ones *above* MSRP. Which most people interpret as "price gouging" and which is very bad business practice in the long term because it pisses off your potential customers. If he has more reds than greens and wants to get rid of the reds first, thus discounts them more, no big deal. -E> >Apparently, the original poster thought the dealer was doing something sinister by charging $100 more for the green ones. Yeah, it's all in the words. The dealer should be saying "I am selling the red ones at a greater discount" and not "The green ones cost more". Reminds me a bit of the original Kawasaki KZ-400 Special. I think it was 1976. Opposite problem. $995 got you a KZ-400 that had drum brakes and no electric start - a less expensive entry level bike. Problem was, the color.... "Pink Panther", we all called it. People wouldn't buy them. The dealer I worked for started putting the brown/gold tanks from the regular version and complained to mama, along with every other dealer in the US. Finally, Kawasaki sent out replacement tanks and side covers. The Kawi dealer had an attic full of pink.
