I have such a service manual for my Bandit and find it unsatisfactory because it is difficult to use. When I work on my bike, I like a manual right next to me where I can easily flip the pages, not one in the house on my computer. You will also find that you can flip the pages much quicker in a manual than you can locate them with the PDF format. I wish I had spend another $15 or so and purchased the manual, which is what I did on my KLR. Joe Grove Jonesboro, AR

I would agree with Joe. The CD version kind of sucks. I'm a powerbook geek and thought it would be great to use in the garage while playing music and browsing the internet like this forum for tips. My reasons not to go digital. Pages are crooked and low resolution. But still take up over a gig of space on my drive. It's better to thumb thru a paper manual when your fingers are a little greasy than on your $2000 powerbook. The PDF's I bought on CD are not keyword searchable. A primary reason you might want digital manuals. Biggest draw back. My copy was not even accurate. I don't know where they got their copy's to scan. But a huge error in my PDF copy said to measure fork oil when the forks were extended when everyone else's said compress. The cause of my fork seal blow out a few days after a seal change. Jim

Not to mention that the PDF version is nothing more than a scanned copy of the real manual that I am pretty sure is not even legal to do. I am not judging or anything, just seems like a copyright is just that. Dooden A15 Green Ape

On the VFR list about 6 or 7 years ago, someone did the same thing, namely, scanned and PDF'd the service manual for the 1990-1997 models. Everything was OK up to this point, but then he plopped it on the Internet and posted a link to it on the list. I think someone on the list actually forwarded the link to Honda USA and he received a cease and desist letter, which he complied with. The poster claimed that, since he wasn't profiting from the distribution, Honda decided nothing further would be pursued provided he took down the file. One of the GOOD points of having the manual on PDF: when you plan a job you can review the electronic manual then do the job with the Clymer. Sometimes it'll give a nice overview. Ed

When I get around to buying a manual, I will most likely scan it for MY use. Since I tend to get greasy when working with anything mechanical, it's nice to be able to go to the computer afterwards and reprint the now unreadable pages. I usually build a binder with each page in a protective sleeve. With the right software, I can even blow everything up to fit an 8X11 page nicely, making things easier to read in the fading light of the evening. Theoretically, if I had a PDF version of a manual (which has never been proven in any court of law), I'd be able to print off the relevant pages of a repair procedure and not worry if the paper got smudged with greasy fingerprints. Then it goes right into the trash with the rest of the packaging and debris. Theoretically. Quoting fasteddiecopeman :

Very good and important point here. I, for example, dreamed that I had a copy and offered it to another lister that asked for it, but I (in this dream) was careful to not post this fact to the group since this copy (which I don't really have) is one of the scanned pdf copies. I fully understand that it would not be legal to offer such a thing in reality and thus only do this in my dreams. Oh, and if I really *did* have such a thing I would have noticed that the two pdf files are a half gig each and pretty slow and annoying to use. I do have the real/legal/paper version and it is *much* better. -- Doug Herr doug@...
