riders wanted?
Hi I am new to the post here. I am really looking at buying a
KLR 650. Is there anyone here from Ohio area. I know this sounds
stupid but all my friends ride cruisers and if I buy a KLR I wont have
anyone to ride with. So anyone want to go for a ride? Thanks!

Wise choice getting new friends. I was just up in the hills roadracing with friends on their sportbikes. The KLR (or many dual sports) can hold it's own to less than good sportbike riders.

Oh your cruiser buddies might ride with you but may
not when you usually can stay up with them and pass
them on the curvey stuff. When you hit gravel or dirt
roads they will probably not continue. It depends on
where you live as to riding buddies. I have not found
a group yet here in Dallas / Ft. Worth as it is a
Harley / Sportbike centered area but have met a few
around here. If you go riding in places like Colorado,
New Mexico, or Utah for instance, you will most likely
meet up with some dual sporters riding the jeep roads.

You might also check out the regional forums over at
advrider.com. There's a lot of guys on huge BMW land
yachts, but I've met some great people through there
to go on rides, often on KLRs or even smaller bikes.
At least here in NY/NJ, there seems to be a lot of
people riding on their own anyway, but if you post
saying Hey, it's supposed to be nice tomorrow anyone
want to ride XXXX area? you'll end up with riding
buddies. It's also a good way to find new riding
areas...

All my freinds have cruisers or Harleys, I ride as
much as I can with them, then hit the back roads where
they will not go. I believe I get a bett ride and
scenerey. I have no problem keeping up, unless it's
windy...then forget it.. I am always up for finding
more riding buddies.. I would suggest finding more
dual sporters on other list too... thats what I am
trying to do right now.

I'm in Fort Worth, and there are some DS riders in the
Motoliberty "family". I just started (with great trepidation) off
road, but after the MSF dirt school, I might be some company. Frappr
lists another KLR rider here in FW also.

broken rear brake bracket
Well, after 5 years of riding my KLR off-road, it happened to me. I
was riding along a relatively benign stretch of dirt with a few rocks
scattered around. The front wheel caught the edge of one and turned it
up. I felt it strike the bottom of my boot and foot peg. Shortly after
that I tried to brake and there was no rear brake. The brake bracket
broke just like the pictures on the Dual Star site. The lack of brake
got me in trouble in a deep rut where I dumped and bent my right
mirror shaft.
Thanks to the aftermarket I will get a new mirror and brake bracket on
Monday from Fred. I chose Fred because he is very fast and the bracket
he sells comes with the bushing installed.
