klr car carriers

Post by kdsipi » Wed Sep 14, 2005 9:28 am

I am looking into buying a car carrier for my 2004 KLR650. I have a class III Drawtite hitch on my 2005 Ford Escape. I have looked at Blue Ox, DrawTite, Grandy County Carrier, eTrailer, GLF and Mototote companies for the single rail tilt rack. Is there anyone out there that is using one? Looking for the GOOD,BAD,and/or UGLY on these or any others that someone may be using. Sure would hate to crash my bike if I ain't on it, that would take all the fun out of it!!!!

Just made up a hitch carrier for a 200 lb trail bike. Is on a Ford Ranger SC 4x4. Wouldn't want a lot heavier bike on the back. Loading and unloading would be harder also. Made mine out of shop scraps + $10 for materials. If I was buying one, I'd think about putting that $ toward a trailer, which has its' own probs. I've been using a MotoTote on the back of an '03 Chevy Siverado Long bed standard cab for a couple years now. I at first used it to haul my DRZ400S about and later my KLR650 about to Big Bend, Arkansas, Tennessee, N. Carolina etc as a means to beat the heat by doing the long boring streches in an Air Condioned truck to pamper my 62 year old carcuss. ;-).. The pluses over a trailer is not having to worry about trailer tires or parking it while out riding about the country side. Easy to load the bike if you make sure to deflate the Air shocks or Air bags which you will really need to keep your lights down on the road and out of on coming traffic's eyes unless you adjust your lights after loading. Also the Air assist keeps the front of the vehical from having that Hunting feel with the bike on back. The centerline of the ramp is genearlly 18" behind the bumper so that's putting the weight kinda far back. I also make sure I'm near empty in the KLR gas tank and carry a 5 gal gas can and keep it up against the cab in the bed as with all other stuff I'm carring with me to help keep some weight forward. One of the other minuss on this particualr set up is that it only has front tie downs and the bike will make this thing wobble side to side with the or front to back in relation with the truck. I slowed this down with an extra bike sling attached to the rear bumper and the handlebar also. I probably have about 5000 miles of hauling the bikes about with this set up and have not had any problems with it yet. I do plan on adding an extra 2" square tubing to the rear to try to help stablize this side to side action more. But putting it as a bolt on thing after the unit is loaded as to not add weight in handling it. Andy in SW Louisiana
