Hi there !
Out of curiosity, just a little question regarding how valves work on the
KLR...
What is a "tight" valve ? Is it, contrarily to what "tight" means, a valve
that tends to remain open (and thus more likely to burn) or a valve that
closes "too much", whatever that means ?
I read that it is worse to have the clearances on the bottom end of the spec
than the top end because too little clearance means the valve remain
partially open, hence loss of power and risk of burning. Is that right ?
If it is, then how come we have to use *thinner* shims to make the valve's
opening *wider* ? It seems to me that when the cam presses on the shim, the
thinner the shim, the less the valve opens. Am I missing something ?

The problem is when the valve is trying to close, not open; if the shim is
too thick, the valve can't close fully, and that's what causes the big
problems.
If the clearance is too wide, then the valve can't open fully, but that's
less severe a condition than having it too tight, and allowing the hot
exhaust gases to leak past the valves on combustion.
That's why it's preferable to be towards the tappy end of the clearance
spec.

valve mechanics
a tappy valve is a happy valve.
also i'd just like to mention here that using good engine oil ( no i'm
not trying to start a whole new engine oil discussion ) or frequently
changed oil can help your valve stay within spec for a much longer time.
and when doing the valve clearence adjustment , do check the tensioner
spring. mine was not working when i did my adjustment. now if we didn't
check that, chances of the timing chain snapping is quite high and my
piston would be kissing the valves. thats a bad thing
