synthetic stuff - really ! this question might be wothtwhile

Post by kusstj » Mon May 23, 2005 12:19 pm

I have used synthetics as I like how they feel in the engine from idling to high speed to shifting. The big thumper of the KLR seems calmer and happier, which makes me calmer and happier. I have used many combos - Mobil 1 automotive. Amsoil mc oil, std dino oils, ( although not the aforementioned Red line catefory V whatever the hell that means) Ironically standard Pennzoil 10-40 felt really good too. but some regular auto oils seemed less smooth, espeically 15w-50 wts. Any hooooo. My question. Regarding clutches. Never have I detected anything you would call clutch slippage in my A16. If clutch slippage was occuring to some small indetectable degree when I made the mortal mistake of using Mobil 1 automotive oil (probably has friction modifiers)Tell me what is wrong with this picture. Clutch plates work because they come together under the load of springs and the friction created binds them up together allowing the power from the motor to turn the shafts in the gear box, etc. I would think it is this friction which causes heat and mechancial wear that after 50,000 miles the clutch will need to be rebuilt, w/ new plates, springs, and misc other components (I have never rebuilt one) So if I use synthetic, and there is a minute amount of slippage, due to more slippery oil, means less friction (you can guess where I am going with this) less heat wear, etc. Shouldn't my clutch last even longer?? Clearly, these evil friction modifiers would not be good if I were to drag race my bike (that would be a sight !!) a any slippage would not be good, and would rob you of power making it to the ground. But under normal use. isn't less friction translating into less clutch wear as long as I don't experience excessive slippage.??? When you think about it the clutch is always slipping a little. - right?? you don't really notice it, it is how a motorcycle drives. Someone set me straight . . . . Before I go and tell you how to lube your chain again. thanks and best regards to all Todd Chaska MN A16 03 F7

No. Think about a piece of sandpaper sitting face down on your desk under a heavy stack of books. If what you're claiming is true, then the sandpaper scratches up the desk more just sitting under the books not moving than if you rub it back and forth fast. Do you really believe that? Thor

So doesn't my desk get less scratched with Mobil 1 than another oil? I guess your point is any slippage is causing wear. I understand your view and feel its plausible. Your clutch is always slipping, And, less friction causing less wear seems equally convincing in my mind. Anyone who can quote a white paper or Designed Experiment? thanks for the reply, Todd

Err, no. My clutch better not be slipping, it'd be worn out already if it was! Your clutch spends most of its time with the plates clamped together by the springs, not slipping any at all. If they start slipping when they're supposed to be sitting there clamped together in a solid lump, then they'll heat up, warp, wear out, and otherwise have bad things happen to them. The hypothesis is that modern molybdenum additives can cause them to slip when they're not *supposed* to slip, which would be Bad with a capital B. The only time I slip my clutch is when I'm launching the bike, and it better quit slipping after that, or I got troubles... -E
