wheelies

Post by billmonahan » Thu Apr 13, 2000 3:14 pm

Why  is it that I have lots of difficulty getting the wheel up?  I can get it up hitting second if I sit back on the seat and boot it into 2nd at redline, wheel comes right up, for a short distance......   Can we have some wheelie lessons in Moab, by one or two experts?    How about some tips on the list?  I want to do them in first gear.....cant' get the wheel off the ground very far.  Help!
I just wheelie.  (As long as I am sure someone is watching).

wheelies

Post by aches@deltech.net » Wed Jan 03, 2001 11:30 pm

Ha ha ha , brings back memories of sliding down the highway, pulling the bike over on top of me to not hit a car in a parking lot, having to sit on a bar stool on one side of my butt for a bit, using the heels of my hands to hold a beer as the rest was too skinned up. Friends digging pieces of shell out of my back, standing ovations at honky tonks, drag strips, in front of schools, etc. These are just the ones I remember at present. Most important thing is to cover that rear break. Next, learn balance up there. Now, my wheelies are only to get the front wheel up enuff to clear an obstical. Ha ha makes a difference when your old and sober. ;-) Andy Louisiana

Everyon has had at least on wheelie spill here and there. I remember my first was on a 87 CR250 at age 11. At could barely get on the damn bike in the first place. I had to park it next to the tree in the front yard. I think that made me the respectful rider I am today. But I still wheelie its just now I learned a little trick to wheelies its called throttle control. Later fellow KLR riders and all others. ===== Jeremy S. Asher A.K.A. Those whom have shafties that wheelie, know the truth. Those whom have been to the strip and watched VMAX's and similar know the truth. Those testers whom have wheelied numberous shafties know the truth. Those whom believe the MPEG's aren't an episode from X-files know the truth... So lets leave it at that... You can probably bounce/muscle a KE 100's front wheel off the ground. I learned to wheelie on a 1971 Honda SL100 by revving in first, then simultaneously sitting back, pulling up, and speed shifting to second. Worked great. __Arden Kysely

Believe me I was shocked as well when I found I could easily power wheelie after my last bit of tuning. But Damn the chain life it's fun. Dave --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Finance - Get real-time stock quotes [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Coriolis effect my ass, everybody knows the corilis effect doesn't come into play until about 65 mph. I didn't fall off the turnip truck, I was driving. gregg A-14 st1300

CycleWorld had done an extensive article on this in 1977 when the BMWs were becoming all the rage. Long story short, the commonly used radial angles on shaft drives at the time were too narrow to allow engine torque alone to pull the front end up. I think it was Feb or March '77. (Cant check the article now as the wifey purged my stash of MC mags after the Northridge quake in '94) Later beemers (post '87 IRRC, after Kawasaki's '86 Concours, Bike of the Year) had gone to much steeper drive angles in the pinion gears on the rear axle, and the issue was mostly resolved. So Yes, some shaft drive bikes can indeed do wheelies. But the vast majority have too little torque offset angle and cannot wheelie. Some yahoos cheat by tugging on the handlebars like some kind of madman, and occasionally do get the front end up. There are also lots of photoshopped pics floating around on the internet that supposedly show some big fat shaftie with the wheel sky high. BS! It's physics folks, not Coriolis, not Areola, not magic. Wheelies on shafties are for the most part bullshit fantasies for people without a decent chain drive. (Concours and later Beemers excepted) End of discussion. MarkB
