nklr - ride it like you stole it!

Post by Jud Jones » Thu Apr 28, 2005 6:07 pm

While on a recent road trip, I heard the following. It may be apocryphal, since I haven't read it anywhere since, and I apologize if it's already been posted: As the story goes, Jimmy Lewis was riding an R1200GS in a recent Baja race, and doiing quite well, perhaps leading. The bike's computer concluded from the way it was being ridden that the bike was stolen, and shut down, couldn't be restarted or reset in any way. He lost several hours and several places, first waiting for and then installing a new computer. Anybody else hear anything like that?

I suspect that's one of those urban legend things. At least I hope it is. ======================= At 04:07 PM 4/28/2005, you wrote:

It's true he rode a new BMW in the last 1000. BMWHP2 I belive. Had electric problems and lost 3 to 4 hours and still placed 3rd. Story was told to me by a member of his pit crew. --- Jon Till wrote:

Hummm..... now I really curious. Did the pit crew confirm the bike's computer concluded from the way it was being ridden that the bike was stolen, and shut down? That's the part I wondered about. Either way I'm impressed that after loosing 3-4 hours he still placed 3rd. I'd be happy if I just finished a race like that :) Jon... ========================================= At 08:19 PM 4/28/2005, W.V. Doran wrote:

As fast as JL rides any bike he's on would think it's stolen. No, I think it had something to do with the ignition system, I really don't know for sure. They were bummed because JL and the BMW were smoking the course. The latest issue of Cycle World mentions BMW testing in the last 1000. I agree, just to finish the Baja 1000 is amazing. In fact if I were able to finish a race like that I would retire and become a very fast bench racer. WVDoran PS to find out what it's like go see "Dust to Glory" --- Jon Till wrote:

He was 115th overall this year. About 20 Hondas ahead of him. In 1998 he teamed up with Campbell and won it. On a Honda. That'll give you a clue what it's like to ride a big Honda, but won't tell you that much about riding a BMW that thinks you are a criminal.

I've got a confession to make. I, er, um, I, well, actually, I ride a DR650. When I was shopping around, I got a lot of valuable information from this list, but when it came time to write the check the lack of a separate cooling system and shims/buckets drew me to the dark side. Howeve, I still read the list religiously, since there is a goldmine of information on non-specific topics, like saddles, luggage, tires, and so forth, even more so than the DR650 list which has a little lower volume. Over the years, I've never met a bike I didn't like, though I've been temporarily pissed off at some of them sometimes. Wish I could say the same for the riders, but it isn't the motorcycle's fault. I've ran into idiots on every brand and style of bike, while I've also met good people on everything from lovingly restored Vespas to full blown Wings with everything but the projection TV.
