how to handle a long day's ride

Post by volsfan1986 » Mon Apr 04, 2005 3:24 pm

My brother and I went on a 250 mile ride yesterday on our '05 KLR 650, which was a lot of fun with one exception: We were ready to get off the bikes by the end of the day. You talk about saddle sore. Man. We took frequent breaks and such, but still tough, nonetheless. What do you seasoned folks do when you want to take lenghty rides? Thanks

I wear padded bicycling shorts (under the riding pants) & tell myself it's better than working!

Beaded seat cover! Adds air circulation and changes pressure points whenever you shift position. T At 04:23 PM 04/04/2005, volsfan1986 wrote:

I just had a custom seat made for my behind by Rich's Custom Seats here in Seattle. Totally transforms the bike in to a more useful ride! It isn't black either. ;) It was expensive, but I can ride and not feel any pain like I was feeling before after only 50 miles or so. He made it so I can stand on the pegs and not feel the seat , so it is narrow at the front, but when I sit down, it holds me in well. :) Nice. I will get a picture of it soon on my website for you all to see. John

Not sure I am all that well seasoned, and I do mostly street riding, but I have found... It took something like 3 to 6 months before I really got used to my stock KLR seat. It may have just been the time or it may be that this is how long it took before I was always using motorcycle pants. I have some winterish pants and a pair of Joe Rocket Phoenix. A few days back the wife and I (each on our own KLR) took a ride that was just a bit over 200 miles. We stopped just once at just past the half way point for about 20 minutes. I did not have any sort of saddle pain at all. My neck was in bad shape for about 20 or 30 minutes after getting home but that was it. I do move around from time to time on the ride, but I really do think the padded over-pants are the biggest factor. Before the over-pants I *was* using the cycling shorts for long rides but I don't think they helped quite as much. -- Doug Herr doug@...

That's four hours, what did you do for the rest of the day? volsfan1986 wrote: My brother and I went on a 250 mile ride yesterday on our '05 KLR 650, which was a lot of fun with one exception: We were ready to get off the bikes by the end of the day. I don't know what kind of milage you have on your '05, but I think the stock seats get more comfortable once they are worn in. My '04 seat feels much softer & better now than when I first got it. Dirk A18

Ya, that's hardly what I would consider a long day's ride. I've done some 700 mile days on the stock seat. I'll admit that I'm glad that I need to stop for my second fill-up around mile 500 though. The stock seat is fine for the 200 mile run up to my mom's house. One thing that helps is not wearing briefs. The leg hole trim irritates my a$$, but that's just a skin irritation. I don't really get muscle soreness. I'll wear either boxer-briefs or polypropylene long underwear on a big trip. The Corbin flat seat I use now is an improvement that allows me to go for as long as I can keep my eyelids open, ~1,000 miles. Get a Corbin flat seat. You will find that you will easily ride twice the distance you mentioned in one day. volsfan1986 wrote: My brother and I went on a 250 mile ride yesterday on our '05 KLR 650, which was a lot of fun with one exception: We were ready to get off the bikes by the end of the day.
