I've got 400 miles on an '05 KLR, I am thinking of changing to a 14
tooth countershaft sprocket so I can putt around on trails without
crashing. I live in Southern New Mexico, a riders dream come true
with dirt roads and trails everywhere in the Sacramento mountains. I
won't be doing a lot of fast hiway riding/75 mph but will need to
run 60 to 65 to keep up with the traffic to get there. With the OE
gears it is going 4000 rpm and almost 60 mph. Any body know what a
14 tooth sprocket revs at 60 mph??? What is a safe max hiway rpm for
the 650??
Thanks.

Changing from the 15T to a 14T your rpm will go from 4,000 to 4285 at the same speed. Above 5,000 rpm the KLR tends to use a bit more oil. If push come to shove it will run at 6,500 all day long.

14 tooth sprocket/new bike
I put a 14 tooth on my A18. I loved it as long as I didn't hit 5th
gear. It took away the gap between 1st and 2nd. To me it seemed like
around town, stop and go, and turns, I would find myself going to fast
for 1st and to slow for second.
I put the 15 tooth back on because I ride on the roads too much for
the 14.
I put the 14 tooth on my A12, because it will be used around town
and in the mountians most of the time. But if I take it out of town
the 15, or maybe a 16 will go on.

55 MPH (indicated) is just about 4500 RPM on mine with a 14 on the front and a 45 on the rear. 14 tooth sprocket & 15 & 16.../new bike
I found that my 14t on the front made my RPM's
somewhere near 4500 for 60 mph, the vibration was
greater, plus a strange, rhythmic vibration, and it
wore my chain and sprockets faster, so I have stayed
with the stock gearing. If I did more slow trail
work, I would probably want the 14t on it, but I
didn't like it for general use, which for me is about
70% street, and 30% dirt.
