'94 klr on craigslist

Hey List, Over the weekend I adjusted my valves, oil change, etc... all was pretty uneventfull (the dealer traded shims with me, bonus!!)until I reved the bike and quickly realized that I had forgot to tighten the oil filter cover bolts down. Boy was that a mess, at least I was standing on the left side of the bike and my clothes caught most of the oil. Anyway, on to the point of my post. Do you guys change or permatex your valve cover gaskets before putting the cover back on? I have had mine off 3 times without doing anything and have no leaks. Just Curious Jody

I strongly advise against RTV due to the risk of oil-pump pickup screen cloggage. I also advise against many traditional gasket dressings due to their tenaciousness which makes for difficult surface prep the next time around. Permatex Hylomar is your friend. RM

The book calls for silly-cone or some other sealant, only on the left side and into the two dips. However, the gasket isn't holding anything under pressure, just splashing oil coming out of the cam journals and such. Is the valve cover gasket a reusable rubber-o-ring or must it be replaced with each valve adjustment procedure? Prefer not to use RTV sealant in that area.

I've been using the same one for 42,000 miles. It is 10 years old now and has one tiny start of a crack in it, and I have been meaning to replace it at my next valve check, but I keep forgetting to get one. I never use sealant on any of the bikes gaskets, and never get leaks. I don't like the extra time and work it takes to not only put that stuff on, but taking it off too. I also don't like the possibility of getting more crap in my oil/oil screen. MrMoose A8 (Barbie and Ken special)
