squealing noise
I was out on the trail the other day when I started hearing a nasty
squealing noise on my A18 coming from the engine area. The tone seemed
to track with the engine RPM and got too loud to ignore within a short
time. It sounded very much like trashed bearings or some other horrible
metal-on-metal situation. The oil level was fine and the engine
temperature was normal. Since I was at the bottom of a steep, muddy hill
I knew I could never push it out so I decided to use the engine to get
me out to the road and deal with the consequences of running it later.
As I was going up I noticed that the tone changed as I went over bumps,
which indicated it may be outside of the engine. I started pressing down
on areas of the bike as I rode and sure enough when I pressed down on
the tank it stopped. Bottom line: I had removed the tank earlier that
day and when I reinstalled it, I neglected to seat it completely on the
rubber bumpers. Once I reseated it the noise went away and I could
breath easily again. The ironic part is that I had removed the tank to
tighten down some bolts in order to quiet a few rattles, and ended up
creating a much worse noise.

squealing noise
Dude, you better check your Doohickey. That's exactly what mine did when it
let loose. When I took it apart there was evidence of pieces being ground to
pieces by the rotor, and stator. Don't delay, pop that puppy off...

Thanks for the suggestion but I resolved this by seating the tank
properly.

squealing noise
Er....... I had a similar noise once on the white rim trail in Utah. I
thought it was curtains for the KLR. Turned out it was my license tag
shoved up under the rear tire. It makes a hellofa noise. I bent it back out
and thought I was fine. I succeeded in loosing it entirely further down the
road.

Oh, you meant "squeaking" noise.

squealing noise
Hmmm... My dictionary defines a squeak as a "short high-pitched noise",
whereas a squeal is a "high pitched howl". I'd say it was more
continuous like a howl composed of 50-100 squeaks/second, sort of like
you would hear if something inside the engine was scraping metal once
each revolution. Anyway it sounded really bad.

squealing noise
Glad you found the problem, that would drive anyone crazy.
If you haven't change the Doohickey yet, please consider doing it. The
piece of mind alone is worth it. Got 60K on my KLR, and the Sagebrush
Machine part looks brand new.
