Hi folks. Wondering if a 1989 KLR cylider head will fit a 2003 KLR.

Don't know for sure, and the part numbers are different as given by buykawasaki.com. The head gasket and cover gasket are the same for both years, so whatever the changes are, they're likely very minor. Note that the piston part numbers are the same, so promising as that is, you should still check clearance there as well. I do know that another rider used a head off a '88 on his '98 with no ill effects. (I bought his '88 for parts) Kurt or Elden would be the oracles of wisdom on this one, and Elden don't do computers. Somewhere in the mid 1990's they changed the head to have a higher guide for the camshaft chain. It's what makes the head cover so $%@#$% hard to wiggle out on the late model KLR's for checking/adjusting the valve clearance, whereas it's a bit easier on the earlier models, which don't have as high a ridge. I assume that this means that the guides themselves and maybe the cam chain adjuster are different, but I'm not sure. I don't have an early KLR model handy to look at. I do think that you could probably do it, but you may need a couple other parts too, not just the head itself.

Do you know if he had to take any of the other parts, other than the head, to make it work with his '98? -E =

The heads look identical and I believe that they are, I have put a late model head on an older motor with no problems. I suspect that the different part numbers just have to do with paint color. "oracles of wisdom" may apply to Elden but certainly not to me! Regards, Kurt Grife [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Well Kurt, until Elden enters the information age, or you drop out of it, you're gonna have to do as our oracle. All hail Kurt, The Great Oracle of KLR Wisdom! 8^) MarkB in the land of the blind...

stock hand protectors

Dale, I'm guessing that your guards are broken where they attach to the bars but otherwise are fine. If you install the Tusk hand guards you can cut off the old attacment points of the stock plastic and bolt the wind deflectors directly to the front of the predrilled Tusk guards and you have the best of both worlds for the cost of new plastic. If you decide to go this route I can send you photos and a better description of the install. http://www.rockymountainatv.com/Product_Details.atv?pid=00038097> Of course you can get custom plastic for the Tusks for any other handguard you choose but the $$ go up significantly. --Jim A-15
