road/offroad setup
Howdy,
Does anyone here do a quick setup for a road to off road setup? Like
swapping a 16 tooth to 15 or any other quick (keyword) swap that
makes life a little more enjoyable in the dirt.
I am trying to mount the small air compressor for the lower tire
preassure convience but find the spare leads up by the headlight are
not live nor the ones by the radiator reserve tank. Is there just
the two fuses by the battery or some other seperate one(s) for these
wires? Thanks

I would NOT use one of those compressors on the bike's wiring harness at all. Wire an SAE connector (like the ones that a battery tender comes with) directly to the battery with an inline fuse. Then cut off the cigarette lighter connector and solder on an SAE connector on the compressor. My vest, and air compressor both have the same plug. I wired another SAE plug to the city lighting wires (the "spares" behind the fairing, only on when the ignition is) but this is ONLY used for low power items like my GPS, or 20w heated grip wraps. I can get away with the grip wraps because I am not using the stock instruments at all. Changing the c/s sprocket is the best way to alter the bike for off-road vs. pavement. I went down two teeth on my back sprocket recently and this seems to increase the "gap" between the fronts. As for chancing tire pressure, I think the more appropriate thing to do (easy/quick) is to use the right tire. Be honest with yourself and decide what type/level of riding you do. Then select a tire that meets that need the best. An aired-down gripster sucks just as bad off-road as a pumped up K270 does on-road.
As a rule, suspension and controls set-up for off-road work fine on-road, but not the other way around. I also have different riding gear for the different demands of each, which makes a huge difference for me.

Surely.
For off-road, I have an open face (motocross style) MX Fox helmet and Oakley goggles, MX Fox chest protector and jersey, Fox Dirt Paw gloves, and Alpine Star MX boots.
For long highway hauls, I have a full face AGV helmet and Joe Rockets jackets and pants, and boots. For hot weather, I have the Phoenix model suit and any other time the Meteor stuff.
For my off-road riding, it's mostly high speed stuff...lots of rocks and debris flying up on me. The boots are to my knees and the dings all over them tells me that I need the extra protection for my lower legs. The open face helmet, besides allowing more air in, also allows for better visibility. (Besides, I hate that head-in-a-bucket feel of a full-face helmet.) This riding is also usually more physically demanding, so it wouldn't really do to be wearing a jacket...even the Phoenix. So the racing jersey over the chest/shoulder protector has me covered there. (I aspire to add elbow pads.) I've been pelted by many objects and had a few falls. No harm. To me, anyway.
The Joe Rocket jackets and pants all have body armor in all the right places, the Phoenix flows air very well and the Meteor has a zip in liner. The boots are less "Robocop" and subsequently offer less protection, but are more than suitable for street riding. With no wind protection from the bike, a full face helmet really cuts wind noise and turbulence, and I'd rather a big juicy bug splat on my visor than on my face. All this stuff, including the gloves, is designed to take the scrubbing that a slide across pavement would give it. Whereas the MX Fox stuff would not.
It would cost a bunch of cash to get all of this stuff at one time, so I got a piece here and there until I had all of it.

I find it easier to ride a dirt bike on the street, than to ride a
street oriented bike in the dirt. (Dam near impossible at times)
That said, I run a 14 counter and low pressure in my 50/50 tires.
I can still boogy on the street and at least can survive where some
of these DRZ and XR-R buckos take me.
Yea, I have the compressor under the starboard shroud, but usually
just pump up other peoples tires.
Rod, usin the Mighty KLR to accomplish all he can, without changin
shtuff back and forth.
