im looking for some advice. I would like to adjust the balancer, however, I am getting conflicting reports, the manual says to lossen it a few turns then tighten it. It meaning the bold. I was on another web site that said to just lossen if one turn. however, am I getting this right, that I lossen the bold one turn and then tighten the bold again? or are we talking about two different bolts. I have never adjusted it and never paid much attention until joining the list. So any advice on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated..john

Sigh...I've heard the same varying advice. Stick to the manual. Tighten the bolt (6mm) to ~70in pounds. T> > > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I must be riding too much gravel lately...but this question came to mind:
Has anyone run a KLR650 without the balancer chain in place? What were the
levels of vibration through the RPM range?

The water pump runs off the balance shaft. So you would have to rig a
short run of chain to the forward blance shaft, then remove the weights
on that.
Steve Kesselring of Quality Engine R&D made a 770cc engine that didn't
use the balancer. Don't know what he rigged up for the water pump, but
supposedly it didn't vibrate badly. Though he was not using the stock
balance factor (piston weight vs crank weight).
Last thing, would be scrapping the entire system and fitting an electric
water pump. I was emailing back and forth with someone who was doing
this (maybe a year ago) but never heard how it worked.
