I once had a 98 DR650. Had the following mods:
IMS 5.1 Gallon Tank
Corbin "no dip" seat
Progressive springs front and rear, kept the rear shock. Easy install
Happy Trails side racks (original model)
Happy Trails also make a rear rack to match the side racks. Needed to carry large amounts of gear.
Installed stock KLR windshield on headlight cowling to help with wind to helmet area.
With these mods and other creature comforts I rode from Los Angeles, CA to Moab, UT and back covering 2100 miles over 10 days over trails, dirt roads, two lane paved and superslab with no problems whatsoever. The bike was flawless! I have also run many 500-1000 mile two day weekend rides.
Best and needed mods, tank for distance, seat! ABSOLUTELY the seat! and the springs only front and rear and the bike is set.
Make sure you get a 1996 or later DR650.
The DR can do it all. The KLR is much better on the interstate for comfort.
Good Luck,
Scott

Was hoping that comment would draw out some extreme examples and it
did, thanks (also checked IBA database and at least 5 guys have done
Iron Butt rides on them). I'm confident a DR *could* go as far as I
want without too much torture given a few mods starting with the seat.

Can the DR be made into a decent two-up rig for off-roading? The KLR is pretty good for toting the chiquita into the local hills, can a DR be set up with a saddle that gets wide back there? Oh yeah, now it comes back to me. Gino had one of those early ones and that's why he hated it. Bogdan> Make sure you get a 1996 or later DR650. >

The Corbin seat is nice and wide in the rear. I will see if I can dig up
any photos I have of my DR, looking down at the Corbin seat for ya so you
can see for yourself.

Based on what I read before buying. The '95 and older had more HP and
weight, with a slightly larger gas tank. Better built in rack. I gather
these ones lug a bit below 3k RPM.
The '96 and newer had less HP, but better gearing, and the rear shock can be
adjusted to lower the bike. The weight reduction is less gas and a lighter
exhaust. Supposedly better at low RPMs.

was my first choice as i started looking for a dual sport because
its light and air cooled but the seat is poor for two up . i haven't
had an enduro type bike for quite awhile and of all of the 650 or
bigger bikes on sale here in cali. - ktm - zuke - kaw - tri - bmw -
and triumph bonneville or kawa w650 with modifications , i decided
that the klr was the best choice so i gritted my teeth and started
checking them out . i found that the klr was relatively lightweight
and could accomodate two up riding . i found that aftermarket was
very good and i guess that i found out the same things that most klr
riders already know !!! yep , i'm glad that i got the klr and i've
enjoyed riding it for the past couple of weeks back and forth to
work !!! ------ i'm really getting to like the bike and i figure
that i'll never get rid of it . its a strange looking bike thats
kinda growing on me and i think of it in the same way that i think
of an old jeep or 70s toyota land cruiser . the klr is good for some
things and limited in others but i like it !!!

I"d go with the aKLR just for the group. This list is positively awesome.
Don't know if Suzuk can say the same. I looked at them both and have to say,
they are so similar-even the weight isn't all that far apart. The only real
diference I see is the air cooled vs liquid. If that matters the choice is
clear. In the final analysis, the KLR is superior simply because that is the
one I chose! By the way, I do love this bike. It has a real "good buddy"
feel about it and the cool looks that can only be appreciated by teen age
males or hard core dual sporters. This thing is absolutely invisible to the
female population.
