right side/ clutch side cover

I have a 2000 klr650 that has be dropped really hard on the right side, the place where the clutch lever goes into the case has been smashed flat and has ruined the seal that keeps oil from coming out the clutch lever mechanism hole. so anyways i have been looking for one of these side cover for my bike, kawi wants 250$+ for the thing and +/-20$ for the seal. i have located a couple of used one, one on a motor that has ben trated poorly, is scared up and is from a 2000 model. i have also located a side cover that looks like it is new, no scrapes or scares, the glass peep hole is clear and nice but it is off of a 88/89 model tengai 650. does anybod know if these parts are same throughout the model years, i know some internal changes have been made but know nothing of the case/cover for the clutch side of the motor. i am leaning twards the 88/89 model cover which is up for sale at 50euro over the beat and scared 2000 model cover for 125$US. please give me some feedback on this one, i do not want the 88/89 model cover to slip away before i find out if it will work. thanks in advance. just to make sure, why do the parts for the 88/89 and 2000 have different part numbers? kawi trying to make things interesting or what? I just wanna make sure so that if i do order this thing up from germany i dont have a 100$ in the trash can. ya know? A17 Circus Bear

Different colors. And I think they did away with the clutch arm bolt after 96. Maybe Mark Van Horn can verify. -- Z DC A5X A12X

They are not the same! Kawasaki changed the clutch in '96. The basket is different. I've machined a few of the later baskets for Elden Carl, to fit to the earlier motor. He has also mentioned that updating the engine required the later cover. So, I'm pretty sure the Tengai cover won't fit your bike. I just tried to call him to get the exact info, but he's gone for a couple of hours. You can call him at 619 440 2960. I think he would be yourr best source for this info. I have a 95 motor on my kitchen floor. 98 motor in my 95 frame. Right side covers are not interchangable. Left side plus stator (coils) are. MY 95 framed w/98 motor is using the 95 left cover and coil. for a couple years now. Green motor and black left side covver. It's only a cover man. Used hard ain't going to make a difference. On Wednesday, I did the three hour ride out to the Quaker Steak and Lube in Sharon, PA to see the spectacle and meet Bruce Williams, who, along with some of his antique motorcycles, is a fixture at the establishment. Bruce introduced me to his son, his daughter-in-law, and some of his riding posse. After bad luck on his dice roll for a million bucks, he escorted me into the restaurant for dinner. We enjoyed the buffet (on Bruce's tab, thanks!) and conversation at a table beneath his 1953 Husky and a 1915 Iforgetwhatitwas which were on display, hanging high near the ceiling. It was neat to hear the stories of some of the bikes Bruce restored and about how well he's set up with tools, etc in his huge garage. I'm envious. After dinner, I mingled with several riders amidst the carnival atmosphere of Bike Night. I'm not sure how many bikes were there, but it was clearly over 1000. It was mostly Harley's and other cruisers, but there was a large component of sport bikes as well. There were also a couple rolling classics. All 6 of the adventure bikes present were sequestered near the French Fry vendor, just bordering on the main lot. I was surprised to find a couple dozen people ogling my Tengai throughout the eve, and several people asked questions about the bike when I stopped back by it to grab my camera. I left around 9:30 and hit the scenic route back towards home. While I was out that way, I decided it would be great to catch up with my old friend Doug in Clarion the next morning, so I stopped at a truck stop at exit 11 off I-80. Once there, I fueled up, bought some snacks and coffee and watched TV in the lounge for about a half hour. I then brushed my teeth (oral care is still an important part of any adventure) and rolled out my tent on a strip of soft ground next to my bike in the far back of the complex. The next morning, I grabbed the $2.99 breakfast special, washed my face and rolled to my friend's house. He was glad I showed up as he was having trouble with a rear tire on his riding mower. He had the new tire on hand and said he had to go get it mounted, but I said, "I have my tire irons and 12V pump handy, let me take a crack at it." I was surprised to learn that mounting a 14" tubeless tractor tire with two 7" Motion Pro tire irons is way easier than tires on my KLR! I spent more time there than I had planned, so the scenic route for the rest of the way home was scrapped. After dinner with Doug and his family, I hit the express lane home and arrived just as it got dark. It was a great 30 hour mini-adventure. Mark
