what size valve shims to purchase??

Post by wefixit4u » Sat Aug 07, 2004 3:37 pm

Just did a valve clearance check. Tight as a drum, all four. Both right hand sides are size 270 and no clearance left. Left exhaust is a 260, no clearance, and left intake is not marked or is worn off, feels the same as the 270's. How far down can I purchase without going to far. I do not really want to purchase a big assortment if I don't need to. Thanks for the help. Chris - A15, Central Ohio

I broke down and ordered one as well, but not for geo projects. How could I resist? It is an accurate model of my pre-modified 2002. Peace! Are you sure you're at TDC on the correct stroke when you measured? I would have thought the engine would be running very poorly if there were absolutely zero clearance on all valaves. But perhaps not, as I've never let an engine get that far gone. My manul shows valve clearance range at .1 - .2 millimeters for intake and .15 to .25 millimeters for exhaust. I've always just subtracted the difference between measured clearance and target clearance from my existing shim to figure what size I needed to order. Doin't know what happens when you get to zero, as I don't know if the seats can wear such that you would have to subtract additionally just to get back to true zero, if you know what I mean. At any rate, I believe the shims are sold in .05 mm increments. For the one with the size worn off, the best thing to do is to put a micrometer on it to determine its true thickness. My opinions only.
