oiling foam air filter
Wondering what everyone is using to soak their foam air filter after
cleaning it? I use the cheap WalMart brand 30w motor oil to soak the
foam filter after cleaning it with soap and water. Any comments,
tips, and links that refers to cleaning and oiling foam air filter are
welcome.
thanks,
Kenneth

Kenneth,
I can't help you with a link, but I have been cleaning mine (KLR and Concours) with kerosene or diesel, blow/wring it out, then spritz it with K&N filter oil. One can seems to go a long time, as I've had this one going on three years.
Works for me.

I use the Notoil system & am very satisfied. They sell a detergent
that works in water to clean their oil & dirt from the filter. Their
system is biodegradable, so when I clean my filter, I dump the water
solution in the yard. They sell the filter oil, lip grease &
detergent as a kit. This is the way to go!

I've always used foam filter oil. Using filter oil you don't really soak the filter. I put the unoiled filter in a large size baggie, pour in a my filter oil about a quarter cup at a time and then knead the filter inside the baggie to get the oil worked through out the filter. Foam filter oil has an agent added that keeps the oil thin until its exposed to the air. Once exposed to the air the filter oil thickens and gets very tacky. I don't know if the foam filter oil works any better than motor oil. Back in my youth foam filter oil was thought to be the greatest thing since sliced bread and being it was the way the pros set up their race bikes it is what we coped for our bike prep. NoToil is also sold under the Honda brand, and I think Kawasaki or Yamaha is also selling it under their brand. I've been using NoToil for three years and have no complaints. One note of caution, while NoToil will work with any foam filter you need to start with a filter that has never seen a drop of petrochemicals. I use a liquid foam filter oil. Forgot who makes it, but it looks like
one can will last the life of the bike since you squeeze out the excess
from the filter, and I put that in a baggie and reuse it.
Motor oil is designed to resist changing its viscosity, and to not turn
into glue with exposure to air. This makes it good in an engine, but a
poor choice for a filter, since you WANT foam filter oil to thicken up
and turn into glue. The foam actually only filters big particles, the
"filtering" of fine dust happens when it gets stuck in the oil that's
stuck on the foam. Motot oil will drip to the bottom of the filter.
I usually clean foam filters with WD40, then a little bit of liquid
laundry detergent and warm water. Woolite would be good but I use
whatever we have for washing clothes.

I was wondering if anybody has used the brakeaway cruise control? If
