I'm a re-tread rider, getting back in, after 11 years out.
An 85 KLR600 has popped up for sale about an hour from me. The
owner has clear title, and new tires, but that's about all I know,
besides that the photo shows a decent clean bike, with no mirrors.
Questions: Are these substantially different from the KLR 650s?
Were mirrors not required on street legal bikes in '85?
I posted this on "thumpertalk.com", but haven't received much for an
answere.
Advice/opinons are appreciated. KLR600 GOTCHAs or other KLR forum
links would be good, too.

Motor on the 600 is very similar to the 87, except bore & stroke. Same vulnerability on the doohickey, and the spring loaded balancer sprockets. Frame is very much different, wheels are different, '84 was kickstart only, '85 had electric too. Also different instruments, different plastics and smaller tank on the 600. Mirrors were required for street legal vehicles from 1968, maybe even earlier. Adding a mirror is easy, basic aftermarket unit is about $12-15 and if the mount hole is boogered out, you may also need a billet mirror mount to fit the back of the clutch perch, also about $15 from Fred or Dual-Star.
