The bad thing about loud exhausts is that they seem to AFFECT THE HEARING. It would also be curious to know what 'weighting' on the db meter is
used. There are always 'A' and 'C' weighting on meters. If memory
serves, 'A' is for theoretical lab testing of 'pure' tone signals and
'C' is the one that matches human hearing response and is the right
one to use for doing OSHA style db pressure readings. I may have A
and C reversed but the one that reads hotter on the meter is the wrong
one of the two.
I'm highly suspect that Ranger Rick or any cop will know the
difference and pick the right one.

I have always run staintune exhausts on all of my bikes, built in
Australia and fantastic workmanship, all stainless steel never need
repacking. Removable baffle as well. As for Cars hearing you I ride my
KTM950 with Acropovics and cars virtually pull out the way 50 metres
away. The new KLR with standard pipe and I'm dodging and weaving
everything trying to squash me!!!. Staintune goes on the KLR next
week!!!

Staintune don't have the 04 on their site, but they are making an 04 and
will be ready on Tuesday. Got a deal with the bike AUD$500 (US$357)
fitted.

From Staintune's website they don't have a product dedicated to the
KLR650. What are you ordering, and most importantly, how much does it
cost??

Hey, I remember the cops busting people for running "Cherry Bomb" mufflers
on cars. Some of these bikes are much loader than that, and no stops are
done. The cops don't need a meter, they can make a decision based on
judgment..

And I've come across deer on my racing two stroke where they have just looked up and gone back to cropping. I used to be one of those people. The cherry bombs lasted about a year before you blew the packing out. Getting a fixit ticket was an annual rite of spring. That was the only period of my life when I enjoyed LOUD pipes. My '60 C10 had headers, the '66 VW truck that replaced it had headers, the Pinto that replaced it had headers I could open up for autocrossing and the best was my little SL125 with an unmuffled reverse cone megaphone that made it sound like a racing John Deere. I wasn't interested in saving lives, was just interested in getting my old man so worked up he'd loose it. Ditto here. I even have deer in my yard. Must be the pulsations of the
thumper but I've never had deer react to any of my bikes like they do to the
KLR. Or maybe it's the John Deere Green.

The problem isn't usually the wires, it's the connections. The wire runs on a bike are short, so you don't need super-heavy-gages. There is information on calculating the required wire gage for a given circuit at http://www.bigcee.com/reference.html You also can't go too big on a wire as far as electricity is concerned, but make sure it doesn't rub on anything...
