Thanks to all for the hints. I'll tear into the fuel system from
the petcock down and see what I can learn.

Ok, I just finished tearing the carburetor apart. I found two problems that may be related. Problem number one was a small piece of black rubber clogging up the main jet (definately the cause of my most serious symptoms). The second was a main diaphragm that was torn up at one spot. It appeared that on part of the diaphragm was not properly seated when first installed and was actually sticking out an eighth of an inch outside the chamber cap. The rubber may have come from that area. The carb is cleaned up pretty good and as soon as the 100 doller replacement part arrives, I should be good to go again. I was surprised to find the coaster enricher diaphragm in good shape. My original symptoms sure pointed to that, but with a piece of rubber floating around in the carburetor, who knows what can happen. -Bryan> I second the clogged main or pilot jet.

$100 part ?
The top diaphram ? I have been told you can normally get them really
cheap at a HD shop, $40 or so for a new one, and maybe might even talk
them out of a take off CV-40 laying in a box of take off parts, since
some HD types take off the CV's that some (all?) HD come with.
So it looks like we all kinda almost hit the nail on the head kinda..

nasty stuff starts to fly for winter )

Dooden,
I didn't think to check local HD dealerships, but I did do an
internet and ebay search with no luck. I would have prefered $40
over $100 and wait 2 weeks for deilvery.

tires again; radial vs non
I know this subject has been beaten to death, but I would like to ask
another question regarding tire selection please. I've got my
choices narrowed down to just two tires; Metzler Tourance and Avon
Distancia. I like the looks of the Distancias, but I can't get the
correct sizes (90/90-21 & 130/80-17) in a radial tire. The next
larger sizes do come in a radial construction. Both of the Metzler
tire sizes come in radial construction. Could I go with the next
larger size without any problems? Are radial constructed tires
preferred over non-radial construction? If there isn't much
difference, I think I'll go with the Distancias. I like both tires,
and both would fit my style of riding, but I would still like to know
what most folks prefer. BTW, I'm ordering from Dennis Kirk unless
someone can point me to a better (less expensive) place. Thanks in
advance for your recommendations.
