state laws regarding lane splitting nklr

Post by klr_a4 » Fri Nov 21, 2003 8:18 am

At one time i had a chart from the AMA, showing which states have approved lane sharing by motorcycles. does anyone remember where - or know of - a list exists regarding lane-splitting laws by state? Thanks, Conall

Conal, good morning. Off hand I thought only California permitted 'lane-splitting'. George Escondido, CA

If lanesplitting is driving between stopped cars at a light or something, Florida used to allow it years back when I lived there. Dooden A15 Green Ape --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "George Basinet" wrote:

From the days when a motorcycle (air cooled) would overheat if left idling for too long. We had lots of traffic, even back then. Rather than have overheating bikes everywhere, the traffic gods approved lane "sharing". Or so I have heard. CA Stu

Yep, California Highway Patrol gave the approval for a lane splitting law. One time I was being extra cautious, driving at a reasonable speed while lane splitting. A CHP moto officer got on my tail and waved me to the side as i was preventing him from getting by. I hate it when another motorcyclist hogs the lane, and doesn't bother to yield to other riders who can split the lane faster. Conall-yields to faster splitters.

I would let a fast splitter pass if they wanted to but most fast lane splitters just fast split some other lane to get past a slow splitter like me ... then I see them going fast and I think "you are gonna die very soon, bro." Slow splitting in CA is better because for some reason everyone's turn signals are broken .. it's the weirdest thing.

Can't cite it from memory because it didnt apply to me but I don't think the following makes much sense since, and again from memory, I believe the requirements for legal lane splitting are that traffic has to be moving less than 45mph and you cannot be going more than 15mph different than the traffic around you. Doesn't leave much room for "faster" and "slower" lane splitting. Well, okay, it leaves 30mph worth of room, but practically not... -Scott

You wish! I am the guy that splits lanes quite quickly. I am, on an average, doing 15 mph faster than traffic. That's an average. I am doing up to 25 mph faster alot of times, and have been splitting traffic since I got here (California) back in '82. Yes, what I am trying to say here is that I am a splitting mother fu**er, and I am not dead, and have never even been in a full blown lane splitting accident. ( I have bounced off the side of one car) I have never been passed by another splitter. No one has even gotton close. I have passed many many other splitters. Actually, what I notice SOME other splitters doing, is just sitting on the line, not passing anyone. Then I come barreling up behind them, sit there for a while, then when I can't take it anymore, (about 15 seconds worth) I nail the throttle and go around them, very closely. The next post on the list, I see that someone has once again mentioned that old wives tale about the traffic doing such and such a speed, and you are not aloud to go faster than blah blah blah. Sorry to say, it's just not true. In fact, there is NO laws regarding HOW to split traffic at all. The law just says you can share a lane. That's it. Other than that, you just use the other laws in conjuction with that law, and split traffic safely. You know, don't go back and forth in between 2 lanes, don't go over the speed limit, no wheelies, no exibition of speed.......just be sane about it. This infomation comes from several CHP officers and sargents, that I have talked to over the years. I have been splitting traffic for all of these years, and although I have had dozens and dozens of tickets, and 4 license suspensions ( 15 years ago) I have NEVER gotten a ticket regarding "lane splitting". Nor have I ever heard of anyone, or read about anyone getting a "lane splitting" ticket. I split lanes right past sheriffs, CHP's and State boys. I split right behind CHP bike cops, splitting traffic in front of me. I even had the chance to lead a bike cop through morning rush hour one day, and I was doing about 15-20 mph faster than traffic. He followed me for a good 7-8 miles, and then waved at me when we hit an open section of freeway, as he wacked open the throttle on his BMW and took off down the road. (as if to say, "nyah nyah, I can speed and you can't.") I do know that if I ever leave this state to live somewhere else that does not allow lane splitting, I am gonna be in BIG trouble.
