Hi all,
I'm wondering how long the chain slider usually lives on a KLR. By
chain slider I'm referring to the black plastic gizmo that wraps
around the swingarm at the pivot point that your chain rests on
instead of grinding into the swingarm.
I've got about 8,500 miles on my 2002 and there seems to be a pretty
good valley carved out of mine by the chain. This is the first bike
I've owned with such a thing, so I'm not sure when/if its bad enough
to worry about.
Thanks,
Louis

chain slider life expectancy?
Louis,
When my KLR was new, I worried about that also. It seems to me like after
the valley is carved out, it doesn't get much worse. As long as you keep the
chain lubed, it should last a long time. My KLR has the original gizmo on
it.
On the return trip from Alaska, the Honda NX650 lost it's gizmo. The chain
made much noise when decelerating, and was wearing into the swingarm, so it
really does need to be there.

chain slider life expectancy?

chain slider life expectancy?
When I got my 94 in Nov, and went completely through it, I noticed
that the slider was pretty worn down, with only 10,000 miles on it.
I found some really nice aftermarket pieces made out of poly, and in
a choice of green, black, or yellow, (that's what I got to match my
barbie and ken KLR) to replace the black chain slider, and the white
chain guide. The poly is a harder material, withstanding alot more
miles, is more slippery to help with drag, and grease, oil, and lube
are easier to clean off of the parts.
Also, if you change that stock slider with another stock slider, you
are suppose to remove the whole damn swingarm to do so. The new poly
slider I got has a slit in it, and all I had to do was cut the old
one off, and bolt the new one on in 3 minutes. After 10,000 miles,
(the odo just turned 20,000 yesterday) my new slider doesn't even
have HALF the groove that the old one had after 10,000 miles. I got
the parts at www.dirtly.com.
By the way, for those of you that have the stock one, and lube your
chain rarely, and/or use tacky or dry type lubes, the wear on that
slider will be accelerated. I use 90 wt gear oil.
