Good Morning - Fellow KLR operators. I've fallen and I can't get up!!
1993 KLR 650 - 10K, sat in garage for past year. Pulled it out and
BD - replaced battery and changed Mobil 1 in crankcase. Ran fine for
first day - It will now only run for just about 20-30 seconds at a
clip and thats only every 10-15 minutes. It will start and run fine -
then fall flat dead like someone removed the sparking bolt!!! I've
accomplished the following:
1) Charged new Batt. to spec.
2) In a prior life bypassed/removed stupid side stand safety and
clutch saftey switches (has operated for hundreds of miles w/o them).
3) Tested removed fuel cock in tank. It operates fine and the bike
seems to be getting plenty of good quality fuel. Can smell raw fuel
when I crank-over and no start. By the way - Why in the HELL did
Kawasaki design and install that goofy, stupid vaccuum safety device
on the fuel cock????!!!!! No wonder the damn thing weighs more than a
battle dressed M1A1 Abrams!!!!
4) Pulled the tank and pulg and checked the spark. It sparks
everytime the engine is turned-over but appears to be a weak one (not
much "spice" or intensity - blueish/orange - sort of muted spark).
Not really sure what to do next. To me the spark doesn't look quite
healthy or correct and I can only imagine with cylinder pressure
added-on it gets worse.
If anyone has any experience and/or advice I'd be very grateful for
it. It guess fast-approaching step 5 is to roll 'er off the end of
the ferry boat!!
Thanks in advance - Scott

You didn't mention in your previous paragraphs if you'd drained the old gas out and put in fresh gas... If you didn't, then you should, as well as drain the float bowl and dump a 1/4 bottle of Seafoam or Techron additive in there to clean up all the crap in your carb.> 3) Tested removed fuel cock in tank. The KLR doesn't seem to throw much spark. I have inspected three perfectly good ignition systems and all three looked to have weak spark, even though I knew otherwise. Nature of the beast, I guess. I very much suspect it's crap in your carb and old gas, try the easy stuff before you start chasing ghosts in the ignition system. Z DC A5X A12X> 4) Pulled the tank and pulg and checked the spark. There is a *different* one, but either of the two aftermarket levers would be a HUGE improvement over stock.
