Hey there, After getting laid off in June, one of my ambitions, aside from learning to surf and becoming the terror I once was on a mountainbike, was to adjust the valves and replace the doohickey in my '96 KLR. But wouldn't you know it, an old coworker of mine got me a job just a couple weeks later at another company so, once again, I find myself working for the man and having no freetime. So, I have decided to plunk down the money and just have someone do the valves and doohickey for me, however, I am leary of taking it to a random shop or dealer in SF. I am constantly hearing about the ineptitude of bike mechanics in the bay area and would prefer to take my beloved KLR to a fellow KLR lover or at least someone who is familiar with these bikes and is a trusted and honest mechanic. Diablo Kawasaki in Walnut Creek is the best Kawa + BMW dealer in the bay Area. They work on the BMW for the CHP and they showed me how to do the valve adjustment on my KLR the first time it was serviced (@ 500 miles). The are a NO B.S. family business. They are within walking distance of BART. so you can drop off your bike and take BART home. Or if you make prior arangments with them you can wait for it. I'm looking into this too. To be fair, I don't think they're all inept around here, but one thing for sure, avoid Golden Gate like the plague. I used to take my XS650 to Tyler at Hayasa Motorbikes in Oakland. He specializes in "Classic Japanese Motorcyles" and I think the KLR qualifies. He was excellent and his prices are very fair. As a result, he is constantly busy, particularly in summer. If he will work on the KLR, you will probably have to book about two weeks in advance. I have also heard good things about the guy at Motojava (Ken? Ron? can't remember) but have no first hand experience. Paul A16 01 M750D SF, CA

Hey there fellow KLR lovers! I may be of assistance to you. I live in Santa Rosa, CA, and got my KLR in Nov '02. It is a '94 that I bought in Elko, NV, rode it home, and then tore it down to the motor in frame. I cannot say that I am a certified mechanic, but I am proud to say that I know KLRs really well. Whatever I don't know, I find out from Jake at Sagebrush Machine or Elden Carl. I have rebuilt my carb, my rear shock, my front forks including springs, emulators, bushings, seals, brace, oil. I have tuned my bike (using K&N filter, Laser Pro Duro Exhaust, etc.,) and it rocks hard and gets 52 mpg. I have changed the doohicky and spring, the brake lines and pads, and I could go on and on and on. I have literally taken apart the whole bike and cleaned, polished, replaced or just fixed everything on it except deep into the motor. There's nothing wrong with it there. I am a perfectionist, and I do things right the first time. I have about 48 pics on the list under PHOTOS of me doing the winter project. Shortly after I got my bike, I met someone up here that bought an '02 for his very first bike, and I am doing all of his maintenance as well and teaching him how to do it and how to ride it. I have a lot of time on my hands right now and can certainly help anyone who needs work done on a KLR! I absolutely love working on KLRs, and everything I have done has worked out perfectly. I know how you feel about shotty mechanics, and all I can say is, if I was going to take my bike to anyone, I would want it to be me or someone like me. Let me know. Why don't we do a Bay Area Tech Session? Is there anybody else in the Bay Area that is interested in replacing their doohickey, fork springs, or upgrading their brakes? I live in the South Bay (Sunnyvale to be exact) and can host a tech session if anybody else is interested. I have a pretty big garage and quite a few tools. If anybody is interested let me know. Moose is da man! Yeah, I'll see if I can drum up any interest, and let you know. Maybe you can come down and supervise? My shop has the tunes, tools, jack, and halogen as well, plus I have air too. I'm definitely in for a doohickey replacement session and maybe valve adjust training, if Moose and Rob have the time and patience. I already have upgraded front springs and an oversized front rotor (both came with the bike). Let's arrange a couple of weeks in advance so we can all get our doohickeys. Doesn't matter to me between Sunnyvale and Santa Rosa--Sunnyvale is closer but S.R. is more fun to get to--I can make the KLR do its sportbike imitation on the twisties. Also ordered short springs from Mike. Don't have new gaskets & don't know whether to get them.
