Yup, finally unloaded the BMW RT and got me a workhorse
KLR650... and I love it! I have a '98, and would like to improve
braking response and feel. Also wouldn't mind firming up the
front forks. For those of you with intimate knowledge of the KLR
(you know what I mean), what would be the top 3 or 4
improvements I could make for handling and performance?

not a new rider, but new to klr...and a few questions
Progressive LR fork springs ($80), Galfer (or other) steel-braided brake
line ($45), aftermarket brake pads ($30).

Hi, I just returned from the Canyonlands Motor Classic '03.
While there I installed new front and rear brake pads from Galfer as well as
the new Oversized Front Rotor Kit from Cycle-Brakes. The results were truly
amazing! The difference in braking was without a doubt the most significant
mod that I have done to date. The other "must have" mod, in my opinion, is
replacing the stock front springs with ones from Progressive Suspension. The
springs greatly reduced the tendency to "dive" when braking while the brake
upgrades actually gave the KLR a real brake for once
