life expectancy?
Hi,
I just bought a 95 KLR650 with 11,000 miles on it. It runs great, no smoke, idles fine, etc....I was just wondering what reasonable life expectancy these monsters have. So far I've only had it off road for a couple hours, and I must say I was very pleasantly surprised. Very capable machine...glad to have found this list, too
thanks,
charles

Here we go again; 1990KLR650 = 65,000 miles befor major work done. Got tire of waiting for the matenance, and bought a 1995KLR650. Currently at 41,000 miles and counting. BTW, regretfully sold the 1990, thought for sure I could have gotten 100,000 out of it. I'm looking at replacing my 1982 gl500 with another swiss army knife
type of bike. The KLR looks like it'll fit the bill, but I haven't
seen much mention of how long these bikes last.
I hadn't really worried about it too much until I found this page:
http://home.att.net/~flafrank/kawasaki.htm
The guy says not to expect more than about 30k out of one....
How many miles can I reasonably expect?
Can anyone recommend somewhere other than cycletrader.com for finding
a used KLR within aboutt 200 miles of southern CT?
thanks,
fnord

Fnord,
You know what? If my 4669 mile '02 took a dump tomorrow, I'd still be
happy as a fly in poo... and I haven't even had it off road yet. This
bike is a hoot and brings back an experience I'd had back in the late '60s
when I was doing a lot of off roading. I'm and old fart and missed the
'thump.'
I bought mine with 3114 miles on it off of eBay in January. Had to drive
up to PA (near Philly) to get it, but I was going up that way anyway so
killed 2 birds with one stone.

My 2001 A15L has close to 30K on it now. These bikes should last past
60K easy.....If you take care of them. If you dont then maybe 30K is
all you'll get. I ride mine to work every day rain or shine. I also
use a cheap nylon bike cover to keep the sun and rain off when I'm
not riding it. some people have over 80K on their bike. I would like
mine to hit 100K.

As the Tech Editor for The Concours Owners Group (COG), I am the keeper of
the mileage stickers for those whose bikes have achieved 50K, 100K, 150K,
200K, etc. Perhaps a Group could be formed of KLR/KLX owners? KLOG
immediately comes to mind, but I'm presently loaded down with MGD so please
dismiss any semblance to sanity. At my age and mentality, it's better
known as stupid shit.

My '95 had over 40,000 miles the day a Ford Explorer killed it. The replacement '99 broke 40,000 miles last month - also made the last payment. I don't see any reason to expect this bike will need much attention before hitting 60,000 and then a simple rung and valve job should do the trick.
