gps vs speedo
I've also found the GPS and the speedo to vary about 5% on both my KLR
and my R11RA. Found the same on Police radar checks with my R11GSA I had
which was in tune with the GPS there also. Even the last ticket I
recieved was right on with the GPS seed reading on flat ground. Uphills
and Downhills, the speed varies a bit.

I have a Garmin EMAP,very nice little GPS.I have noticed that with
the emap mounted on my KLR at say 20-30 miles per hour there is
little differnce in speedo read out.But at 80 Miles per on the
speedo=73 miles per on the Emap.Major diff especially if u are
crusing down the road and everybody is blowing by you and you look
down at your speedo and you think you are running 65 Miles per.I will
post a pic of the mount in the files section.I am loving this bike
and thanks Fred for all the help witht he parts Bob in Bama

The stock KLR speedo reads about 10% high at all speeds.

Todd:
I am using to sources to my "about 10% high" number.
- GARMIN GPS on the bike
- GearCalc software calculations (this assumes that the electronic tach is
accurate)
GearCalc and the GARMIN GPS match.
Sorry about you ticket,

Yes Bob.
Thru the last 5 or so bikes I've run a GPS on the KLR is the worst one for
being off on the speedo. Also, When you're going uphill or downhill the GPS
will also be off.

Check it with a cop with radar and come back and talk some more.

The standing behind my statements is checking gps speed vs speedo vs
Arkansas state troopers radar readings. I was at a gas stop/resturant in the
Ozarks and ended up in a discussion about gps's with the troopers there. And
was telling them about a difference in straight flat roads vs
uphill/downhill differences in the amount my speedo deferred from gps
readings. One of the troopers couldn't see where it would make a difference.
The other agreed with me on the theory that from above the distance I would
travel would be seen as less. So we ended up on a long hill outside of town
and they did readings of me going up hill and down hill ( which readings
were the same) then found a flat strech and did the same thing at the same
speed and rpms. This convinced myself and them that there is a difference.
Though slight.

If you look up the definition of "Joe Sixpack" in the dictionary you will
see my picture next to it, and I like a loud dirt bike.
Joe Sixpack has spoken.

I like the part that they claim no performance gains that are worth
mentioning.
