totally bum'd out!

Need to bitch a little and pick your brains: Just took my beautiful 2002 KLR650 with 800 miles on it (bought it through eBay and had shipped to California from South Dakota) to my friendly, local DMV. Not good!!! They couldn't find a smog sticker on it and informed me that if it doesn't have one that... (smile on his face) "You won't be able to register it in California because it has fewer than 7500 miles on it." I'm so far behind times that I didn't even know that motorcycles have smog equipment on them until I got on this site recently. And, yes, I know ignorance of the law is no excuse. That doesn't help a helluva lot at this point! Anyway... does anyone know where I should look for a smog sticker on this model? The DVM inspector suggested looking under the seat, but I had no idea how to lift the seat. Didn't get an owner's manual with it and my trip to town was only my third ride on it. Would a bike from SD be likely to have a smog sticker? If it can't be registered in CA, does anyone know if it could be registered in NV or OR if I have to resell it? Any other ideas??? Thanks for your help, Terry [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I think they're referring to the sticker on the side of the frame's head-tube that's like the one under the hood of every car. "This vehicle conforms to EPA regs in effect on the date of mfr listed above blah, blah." The parts diagram lists 59461-1776 which is an emissions routing diagram on the inside of one of the rear covers but I don't think that's what they want. I think that CA requires vehicles that do not meet CA emissions regs to have 7500 miles on them in order to prevent us from going to Vegas to buy our new cars/bikes. I think the easiest solution is to buy lunch for a local KLR owner and borrow his instrument cluster for an afternoon. You might want to take the bike to another DMV location next time as well. RM
