subframe bolt upgrade quandry...

Post by d0ch011iday » Sun Nov 10, 2002 9:39 am

Hiya, I bought the BigCee subframe upgrade kit for my A4. I dismantled the bike theis weekend to overhaul it and while doing so, noticed that the upper subframe mounting lugs are not separate pieces welded to the top cross tube, but is a dumbbell shaped piece that runs across both sides. kinda like this (hope the ASCII comes out: __/ \_ / \ / \ -------\__________/------- ^^^^^^| __________ |^^^^^^ ^^^^^^ / \ ^^^^^^ """"""" """"""" \ / The thing I am confused about is that the instructions say to drill one side thru to the other, but there isn't enought metal in the skinny center portion. Do later KLRs have separate bolt lugs? Am I supposed to drill all the way across or cut the center out? Thanks, James

James, the only thing I can tell you is what I encountered doing my A15 - I'm unfamiliar with the setup is on your bike. On mine, the upper was bolted to the main frame tube with a bolt on either side. For me, using the DS drill guide, I started on one side and drilled all the way through to the other side using the honkin' big drill bit they provide. Then the new, single bolt is pushed through from one side, and "nutted" on the other. Hopefully you'll hear from someone who has the same year bike as yours, or knows what the story is. I did mine some time ago, but when I was unsure of something - long enough ago that I don't remember what - I got a very response to my question... with my dual star kit i had a large drill bit but what i did was use a long smaller bit to make a pilot hole all the way through the subframe then used the supplied bit to make the final hole dual star supplies a drill guide piece im not sure if the big cee one does but when you have done there will be a hole all the way through the top subframe mount which the larger single bolt uses (replacing the small stock bolts). not sure if this is what you meant. caution though make sure you drill with the bike level and the sub frame supported and drill straight or you may end up with a heafty bill for a new frame. paul A16

I've used a front MT-21 knob with a couple different dual-sporty rears (one was IRC GP-110, can't recall the other) with no problem. __Arden
