carb flooding ? / gps mount

Stock KLR A16 400 miles. California model with smog box etc. happened twice, I'll drive her for a mile and she'll fall on her face. I'll restart her with wot and she won't run under 3k rpm with some black smoke and minor exhaust popping. I'll let her sit over nite and she's perfect again. I do remember leaving the choke on half way while riding home from my other house 8 blocks away the night before this happened. Could there be excesive fuel build up in the fuel return sys and dumping it in the carb the next time I ride her? Any tips or suggestions are most welcome I have a Garmin 12XL ( in my truck w/laptop for finding clients) Would like tips/pics on mounting her on my KLR. Thanks for your time Lefty
