can't wheelie my klr ( please help)!

Post by Guest » Thu Apr 11, 2002 6:49 pm

I tried the advice from past wheelie threads but can't seem to loft the front wheel. I think I have this fear of flipping the bike over. My technique: 5 MPH in 1st gear Blip the throttle to extend the forks Yank a (half) handfull of throttle and pull back on the bars. Result is nothing. Do I need to be on the pegs or on the seat? How hard do I pull back on the handlebars? How much throttle, full, half,..? I know this is subjective, but I really WANT to wheelie. I've been riding street bikes for 20 years and am having a real blast with my 2002 KLR. Please help guys. Fel

- go about 5 mph hold in the clutch, rev up the motor to about 5000 rpm and dump the clutch and hang on. todd -- In DSN_klr650@y..., "madfel2k" wrote:

Sounds like you are a prime candidate for the video tape that is being sold on Ebay. Let us know how your lessons go after you get it. -svt- A12 Unisaki

It is not easy to wheelie one of these beasts. There's a very narrow zone in first gear that you must be in to get the front wheel off the ground, but it can be done. I can only do it about every other time I try. It also depends on whether the bike has been warmed up or not. Your best bet is to ride for 10-15 minutes, make sure your gas tank is less than half full and just practice. You don't need to bounce the bike. Just get her rolling, give her a good hard twist on the throttle and pull up on the handle bars. It's a feel thing. Good luck, Brad J. Morris A16 "1 Putt" Illinois

If you haven't wheelied anything before, the KLR can be a handful. I'd advise practicing on a smaller dual-sport first. But if you must abuse your KLR, the clutch is the key to getting the front wheel up. Sit back a ways on the seat, get 'er rolling a little in first to establish some linear stability, then pull in the clutch, boost the revs a bit and let it out fast. All of this takes about a second or less. Be prepared to let off the throttle if the front end gets too high. And check your medical coverage before practicing. __Arden Kysely

All of this talk about wheelies and nobody mentions the clutch. Stick it in first, give it a handful of throttle and let out that clutch. You'll wheelie! Just make sure you don't fall off the back - that's the hard part. --- Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Version: 6.0.325 / Virus Database: 182 - Release Date: 2/19/2002
