Since it was the first sunny somewhat warm day here in the foothills of northern california, everyone brought out thier bikes, I mean everyone. I went for a ride saturday around some backroads, and got passed by lots of sportbikes, they were all pretty cool about it though, they just wanted to go fast. I came around a corner and saw about four of them taking a break on the side of the road, I figured I'd give em' a laugh so I slid back on the seat, put my feet on my back pegs and layed down on the tank (of course wearing MX helmet and goggles!) and went WFO, anyway they were all laughing as I passed (must have been the wonderful lawnmower like sound of my KLR) It was great fun. On my adventures I passed by many other bikes, lots of cruisers, funny thing though, a lot of people wave, which is cool, but of course (and I thought it was hilarious) the guys on harleys never waved, never not one. I asked a friend of mine (who has a harley sportster) why they were like that, he said it ruins thier badass image if they wave at non harley riders, what crap. Anyway I don't have anything against harleys, I kinda like some of them and would probably have one in the garage (ya know for sunday rides :-) if they weren't incredibly over priced, $22,000 for a motorcyle that if you break something on your out thousands of bucks to fix. Here's one for the people who despise the stock dunlops (So Do I now), I was slowing down to sit on the side of a dirt road (the back way to mom's house) under the shade of a tree to take a break to look at the scenery. I pulled off the to the side and stopped, put my feet down had my hand on the front brake (was pointing slightly downhill) went to kick my sidestand down and the front tire starts sliding in about 1/2 inch of mud It made me lean to my left I was caught off gaurd and the bike went down slowly but surely. I was a little pissed, the engine died, I got up dusted myself of went over picked up the bike (a lot easier than I thought it would be, I picked it up like I was picking up a bicycle) Only damage- scratch on the flimsy stock handguard! Anyway got back on the bike ready to take off, sidestand up, clutch in, bike in nuetral, kill switch in run posistion, hit the starter- nothin' try it a few more times- nothin, sit there and think for a few seconds (about why this happened in the first place) hit the starter again, fires right up, what the hell, oh well it runs. Any ideas on that one? Trevor P. A16 Now riding whenever he doesn't wake up late for work! P.S. I agree, it was a beautiful weekend in California Norte. I was out on the coast yesterday doing some riding and a little hiking. I was on my Bandit and my pal was on his 74 MotoGuzzi, a way cool bike with lots of power (he has a 1000cc kit in it). Harley riders, who've spent a huge amount on a bike they believe will make them look "tough", which is an insecurity thing caused by not being very tough in the first place, wouldn't want to risk losing that tenously-interpreted feeling of being "tough" by waving to anyone on a "jap-bike". I hang out some with Harley riders at some stops and always, always, get a big kick out of listening to them talk about their bikes. It's always "looks cool", "stylin", or "baaaaad", and then I have to hear how they take their bikes to the dealers for a simple service. Having owned several H-Ds in my lifetime, I can tell you they are about the simplest bike to service in the world....easier than a KLR!! These guys are just suckers, which shouldn't be any news to you...P.T. Barnum warned about them many years ago.

If it went down on the left hand grip, there's a starter cutout switch in the base of the clutch lever assembly. My guess is that got slightly displaced, and eased itself back into position after a few minutes. A good hit on the clutch lever assembly will really displace it. A lot of guys disconnect the safety switch (and the one on the sidestand). I haven't yet, but I've had to take apart and reassemble the clutch base. If it ever gets squirreled in the field, trying to start in neutral, or trying to start while moving the clutch lever in and out (in neutral, of course) might work. Jett

Here is what seems to be the authorized Wave Regulations as regards to non-Harleys: In town: Never wave undeer any circumstances. Out of town: 1) Waving permitted when travelling alone or with one other Harley. 2) Waving in groups of 2 or 3 Harleys permitted, but discouraged. 3) Waving prohibited when traveling in groups of 4 or more. 4) Waving never initiated first. 5) Waving prohibited if first Harley rider in line does not wave. Say's with a smile something about H-D riders:) A couple of reason why Harley Riders don't wave: Their engine is too weak to handle the extra wind resistance of waving. They can't see you because their "beanie" has slipped over their eyes. They think we are trying to draw their attention to the parts falling off their bikes, & their are sick & tired of it. They're too busy to see you, figuring out how to pay for the next order of Genuine Harley accessories. Brad A15

Trevor- Thanks for the nice post. Regarding the weird start... Did you smell any gas? I've had that happen after dumping my bike. Heard a slight electrical sizzling sound from the starter, and the engine wouldn't turn over. Waited a few minutes then it started fine. My theory was that some fuel leaked out of the carb or gas cap and into the starter, shorting it out temporarily (the smell of gas was evident). Had to let evaporation off a hot engine run its course. Just a thought... "Mokan"

Say's with a smile something about H-D riders:) Hey, Here's a funny thing to do to your Harley friends at Christmas! (Just make sure that you really ARE friends, lest you piss them off royally!) Last Christmas we got tired of our buddy asking us when we were going to get our Harleys (uh huh), so we went over Christmas eve with a few presents from the "Harley shop". His first present was a nice new chrome (well, silver, anyway) oil pan with a Genuine Harley sticker on it. Then, the second present was a Genuine Harley stickered bag of oil dry! OOOOHHH man, laughs all around! Except for our buddy, who said some nice words as we were leaving! Well, at least he got over it. And you know what? He doesn't ask us about getting a Harley anymore. My wake up late for work ride *is* my KLR (maybe the CBR if I'm *really* late ;> ). When I'm on time it's a pedalbike... As for the starting problem. You said "clutch in" right? Maybe my bike was malfunctioning as well, but before I disabled the clutch & sidestand switches it would only start in neutral with the clutch *out*. Stalled it at a left turn light once and knew that setup *had* to go. How they figure that's a *safety* feature is beyond me. -Trevor W. (guess I gotta add an initial now)
