nklr: funky paperwork on klr

Well, my little KLR care package arrived today (finally!) and I'm still a little suspicious, but maybe its totally unfounded. I'm looking at the title, and the name of the guy I bought it from is NOT on the title anywhere. He didnt sign the back of it or anything. The name and signature that are on the title, I'm guessing, are from the original owner. The guy I bought it from (on eBay) told me that he had bought it from someone else. The strange thing though, is that its a New Jersey title, but the guy I bought it from told me he bought it off a guy in Florida that he met in the hospital. WTF? Normally, I wouldnt ask here, and instead, I'd ask the guy I bought it from...but he still hasnt answered my emails or returned my phone calls (something else that makes me wonder). Is this guy trying to pull something???? (thanks, and sorry to keep being such a pain in the ass)

I'm not sure what the sales tax situation is in your part of the world but here in the quasi-socalist, heavily taxed, Great White North it's not uncommon for people to duck the tax man. Guy 'A' buys the machine from guy 'B' but never registers the sale and thus pays no tax. When guy 'A' sells, he simply passes the title ( still registered to guy 'B') to guy 'C'. On paper guy 'A' was never involved. Maybe this is what you're dealing with?? On the other hand, I'd still run the VIN to be sure it's not stolen. Good Luck! Steve A11

At least here in NY, if you hand in a title along with a bill of sale, you won't get the new title for 6-8 weeks. If the guy who sold you the bike had any intention of reselling it quickly, he did what he had to do. Also, the same guy who would not bother to send you the package in a timely manner might easily put off the DMV as well. Devon A15 Steve Pye wrote:

I have bought and sold bikes and other vehicles using this method and rarely have run into problems. I live in socialist California. Even the DMV here doesn't worry much about it. In CA you are limited to 7 vehicle transactions per year, more and you have to get a dealer license. Bill BMW R1100RS (a great machine for my expensive tastes) KLR A-12 (cuz I am cheap sometimes) Suzuki B12 (I like to haul ass too) Triumph Daytona 500 T100R (for when I want to feel 19 again) Two bad dogs (sometimes a person can be a little stupid)

Agreed that the transaction seems to smell bad. But in NM there would be no need to track down anyone. Just apply for the new title. Many private sellers, and some dealers, will even leave the cost of the transaction blank so the new purchaser can tell motor vehicles whatever they want to to determine what the sales tax will be. I'd go register it and see what DMV tells you. If they squack about lienholders or other title complications, then get ebay involved. If it titles without a hitch, then the bike is yours, story over. Todd

Maybe the guy bought the KLR,wanted to sell it asap,and in order to save sales taxes,never switched the title over from the guy he bought it from?? You said you had verified it is not stolen,so verify the numbers on the title are the same as on the KLR,go switch the title into your name,and hopefully,all is well. Jon Neet

Ok, if I was you, I'd just take the title you got, check the vin numbers against the bike, and if they are correct, just get the title transfered over and forget it. Just don't tell the DMV people anything about the whole ordeal. As far as *you* know, you got it from the guy that is on the title. Don't say anything that they don't ask for, as those kinds of details can make title transfer a problem. Ryan

That is most likely the way it went specially here in Florida where you have to pay a $300.00 USD Impact Fee for registering an out-of-state vehicle. I'm in agreement on "the transaction stinks". I've done some investigating and emailed someone else who bought from him on eBay. Seems that this guy has sold alot of cars and alot of bikes on eBay. It appears he might be a "dealer", however this never came up in any of our conversations, and he told me he bought the bike from somebody he met in the hospital. Well, that was in Florida so I'm still puzzled by the New Jersey title. Also, if he is a dealer, he certainly doesnt have good customer service. Once he gets my money, he goes silent? WTF is that all about? What is he hiding? This whole transaction has soured my buying experience, so I'm not sure what I'm gonna do. I really wished I would have bought at a dealer, or done more research on this guy before I bought it. I guess its a lesson that I've learned...and I think back to that post the other day about "Poor Service". Its a shame we've got people that do business like this. Buying a motorcycle should be exciting, not a total pain in the ass!!
